Chess Variant Pieces

Do any of you play chess variants? I like to play Alekhine's Chess and Capablanca's Chess (to name a few). The problem is that pieces for those games are not readily available. I know that Omega Chess and Gothic Chess sets are available but it would cost more than $50 to get a set delivered to me here.

I've made a few of the fairy pieces by destroying my own pieces (from a normal Staunton set) I cut the hats off of Rooks, Bishops, and Queens and glued them onto Knights to make Marshalls, Cardinals, and Generals. The pieces look pretty good and it was only my first try. I'll probably try again and maybe make some jigs to make the pieces a little more "perfect".

Has anyone else tried making pieces this way or do any of you have other suggestions on where to buy the unusual pieces?

I thought that this thread was going to be about whichever chess variant it is that has two extra pieces, an elephant and something else (a hawk) I can't recall. (Seirawan chess, thanks Wikipedia)

I haven't played any variants but I remember one summer years ago when someone had an Omega Chess Set at the sadly long gone chess tables on Gould Street here in Toronto.  It seemed interesting but really isn't my thing.  I have enough troubles with regular chess let alone learning any of the variants. :-)

@Moriarty_697: i don't want to sound rude but your last sentence is what most old people like to say when talking about variant chess.

"Isn't regular chess difficult enough"

Fair enough.  I was more trying to highlight my own limitations than announce my impending ascendance to crusty old fart-hood but I get it. :-)

For what it's worth, don't think that I'm criticizing chess variants, because I'm honestly not.  The reason I even clicked on this thread is that, whether I play them or not, I remain curious about all the myriad ways that people play chess.

Personally i like Knightmate variant, in which the roles of the knight and king switch roles.
