I have this coming in the mail.  Am I going to be able to search different ECO openings?  Now I need an engine and GUI board?  Can I create my own databases also?  Any info would be helpful for this chess computer software novice.  Thanks.

I use the free chessDB software, and i then download the weekly games from theweekinchess.com.  Total cost = $0.00

Very sweet, the TWIC and Reader combo is the bomb.  The Reader installed smoothly.  The TWIC games downloads to Downloads, drag from there to desktop, unzip and Extract All but changed destination from ending of \desktop to ending of \documents\chessbase\bases and it extracted right into the Reader.  Very easy, straightforward, cost effective.  Toggled thru game moves by rotating mouse with incremental detentes or by clicking where desired in game.  Thank you.

Actually, I am unable to create sub-databases just like the answer from ChessBase said.  If I try to create a collection of games I want to study further, it wants me to export that file to a version of Fritz.  Without a Fritz version, I would have to go through the search steps each time to create the sub-database of interest.  There is a filter for dates, player, ECO opening or combinations of these, so you'd have to know what you're looking for.  This may turn out to be not so bad since otherwise I would be searching repeatedly thru the already-created files to find what I'm looking for; you can only put so much description in the file title so that could make it more difficult to find it.  I'll keep this in mind and see if I need to get a version of Fritz and give feedback here one way or the other.

Some more feedback on the Big Database:  I wanted to play thru a game in the new ChessLife magazine, a game from after the Database archives which I think goes thru Sept 2015.  I downloaded all the intervening weeks from the This Week in Chess website downloads into the ChessBase Reader.  I found the right week on the 2nd try and the correct game by using the filter and obtained the diagram in the ChessLife magazine.  That's the pro; the cons are that I am not able to merge the new weekly downloads and that the Reader filter only works by year rather than by the exact date of the game.  In the filter you enter one player's name (at least) and check the box Ignore Colors and it will find all games in that database by that player.  I did not need to buy the Big Database, of course, to find the recent game but that is for games in my chess books.  The object of me buying the Big Database was to avoid setting up the games all the time on a board, so I think that has been achieved and I'm happy about that.  The dates of games are given in the This Week in Chess downloads, so for newer games on this website that gives the date the games were compiled, so that is a good start for finding the correct week's download.  Hope this helps.

If you download the PGN versions of TWIC, you can open them as text files and merge them. It's awkward. If you do it often enough, you may find the commercial version of the database is a bargain.

Thanks again Ziryab.  There is a lot I don't know about using ChessBase reader.  I have a link of

http://chess.geniusprophecy.com/intermediate/how-to-use-chess-software-chessbasefritz/

to study regarding using Fritz/ChessBase.  I see people posting games in the Puzzle comments all the time and hope to become more proficient using the ChessBase reader.  In a few months I hope to get an older Fritz version and also to upgrade my membership to do unlimited Tactics, eventually upgrade again for unlimited Chess Mentor but that is down the line.  I am not making fast progress and don't have the memory for a lot of opening theory, but I can pursue this as a hobby at my own pace and Tactics Training is pretty fun although I don't see a lot of them on the 1st try.
