Hi, I am returning to chess after years away and am intending to buy CB/mega/openingsDB.  My question is does a new version come out regularly, and if so when?  Thanks in advance.

Yearly.. u dont need to constatly update chessbase.. because the engine current in power is stockfish n komodo. As for the database its being update periodically... but if u buy the android chessbase version its database is live and cost only 14 bucks or so

Thanks for the reply, guardianx9.  Yeah, twic is a great site.

CB is good software, but expensive.  It seems silly to me to buy it now if the new version is out in a few weeks and then have to pay yet more for the upgrades.

Have you considered any of the alternatives to CB? For instance, both "SCID" and "SCIDvsPC" are free databases.

I have CA/Aquarium and like it a lot, but tbh think that CB is the best as it integrates with other software (eg Informant Paramount DB).  My only real issue with CB is that it is overpriced and I want to give them as little of my money as possible.  :P

New version comes out about every 2 years, not yearly.

  • ChessBase 10, October 2008
  • ChessBase 11, October 2010
  • ChessBase 12, December 2012
  • ChessBase 13, November 2014

Expect the next one probably around the end of next year based on this schedule.

As to whether or not it is worth it, that depends on how important it is to you.  There are plenty of competitors at lower price ranges (ScidvsPC is free, Chess King in the $50-$100 range, Chess Assistant in the $100-$200 range).  I personally find Chessbase to be worth it, but certainly someone could go with one of the cheaper or free options and get most of what you can do in Chessbase with little effort.
