The red color brings back nightmares of my $200+ mistake of the red color coming off on my fingers (I believe it was in 2016). I do hope they learned how to seal the pieces.
Chessbazaar - Dubrovnik in red stain

@EBowie Don't worry, it seems a lot more people would buy stained sets and enjoy them. There's plenty of show-n-tells here from people who seemingly don't have any hang-ups with stained pieces like this link here.
Even noting the red on black squares color combo like yours (picture by Powderdigit)
It's the contrast that brings out the colors.

Very bad memories from the red painted Chessbazaar Dubrovnik! The red paint along with the fake vanish came off quite easily as I tried to clean them for fear of covid. I knew that CB sale items have a catch but I optimistically took my chances and was painfully stung again by Chessbazaar!

@Yenster1 ..... I have no hang-ups with stained pieces. The stained pieces have to be sealed. Never had stain come off in any other set made by others. I guess the person finishing the sets back then did not know how to finish wood. There was no other issue as far as the carving went.
NOJ stains many of their sets and look at the finishing job they do!!

@TundraMike .... Hey sorry, I meant no offense to you. But that other guy has repeatedly taken a hard-line stance against any pieces that are stained/ebonized/painted and says he'd never buy them. And yet what's comically ironic is that he's just now showcasing a new set of Isle of Lewis pieces, and they are painted .
Yeah I've seen an NOJ Burgundy set that's gorgeous, and another very appealing green-ish set that stood out too. I guess there might be considerations on how to clean stained sets so as not to disturb the finish, but there are also considerations for plain unstained boxwood too (there's a post around here regarding baby wipes). And I'm guessing even NOJ pieces are vulnerable to some types of solvents.
Anyway, I'm hoping everyone enjoys their new acquisitions.

@Yanster1 No offense taken. I am sure after the 2016 incident of the red stain coming off that they rectified it going forward. Enjoy your new set.
I do wish that they could source maple wood in India but I am told that would be expensive to import it. That would make for the same wood NOJ used in their original set that makes the pieces look white, which they are.

The board, I’ve had for a few years, is just a black and maple, Spanish veneer, from House of Staunton.
I have the C.B. red Dubi for a couple of years, with no issues at all. It's one of the C.B. sets I have gotten that came in absolutely flawlessly.
Great price....Nice set. Probably not totally period correct in exactitude, but it's so nice I have no issues there.
Wow, this brings me back on this forum a good number of years. This was when the Dubrovnik rage was at full tilt. And this also was when the red pieces of this set were very popular. In fact it prompted me to buy my Noj Dubrovnik set in red.
Yes Chess Bazaar had their problem with the red stain coming off when even slightly wet. It appears they have fixed this problem.
I have bought 4 sets from Chess Bazaar and have had no problems whatsoever. I have been quite fortunate with this company.
While I do like the looks of this set, my buying is done, alas.
So's mine....Thanks to jaques-lover and MCH's influence. Seems I've got everything else I like covered, except for a nice classic/vintage Jaques....Minty of course......Not any time soon.

My first Dubrovnik set was red stained. I don´t know if it was made by CB or some other maker but it doesn´t bleed.

It's the contrast that brings out the colors.
How well did Biro finish that set? Does it come off on your fingers? My Biro set is more brown and it's finished very well.
Since my bad experience with Chessbazaar I do not trust stained chess sets any more. When I was trying to clean Chessbazaar stained dubrovik set I noticed that my hands and the tissues were covered on red colour and unfortubately the paint also went onto the boxwood pieces staining them too which looked really frightening. The varnish also started peeling off and I ended up removing all of them in the end. Every time I purchased a chess set on Chessbazaar sale offers I regretted it later and that is why I stopped buying from them altogether. Now that House of Staunton offers free worldwide shipment with 30% discount it is really mad to buying from CB or similar sellers.
I really love how the red pieces pop off the black board. I would recommend this set, for anyone who may be looking at buying one. Sorry about the picture orientation.
