Chessconnect: a free chrome extension for electronic chessboards

The truth is, it has a lot of merit that to play in lichess with my boards I prefer to use kiwi + chessconnect. The original apps give me less functionality. It's funny that you spend a lot of money on the board and in the end, if you want to enjoy it 100% you have to use a free browser with a free extension.

@Anpear_Chess - I still think there is some value in the apps, they work ok. It is just so much easier to be browsing one of the sites, get challenged to a game and all I have to do is turn on my board, accept the challenge, and connect. It makes the whole experience very smooth and easy.
The work Jörn has put in (as well as all the others who have contributed) has truly given the e-board community a great way to enjoy online chess.

Jörn, knowing that you worked with the developer on that project just means I am going to put it on my list for “want to buy”. It will go well with my e-board collection (which, with that would reach 9) and will give me a very wide variety of equipment to play with. I could even loan one or two to friends to play “real OTB” chess online, or at least the closest we can get from our homes.

That house of Staunton electronic board looks so beautiful! Will it be available in Europe?

I have written a short blog article over at lichess.org. It tells the story of how Chessconnect developed from something I wrote for myself to where we are now. Hopefully, it is as entertaining to read as I think it is. So, if you are really bored, you can read it here.

Version 3.3.24 is out bringing us spanish translations. 🥳🇪🇸

Very interesting story!

Thank you very much for all your help

When I tried this out (Mac and Chrome with Chessnut Air+) it was beeping continuously. I think it was "seeing" the random positions that LiChess throws on its home screen and recording them. Now the "storage" is full (flashing yellow status) and my Chessnut Air+ is almost bricked (it connects fine, but no game can be played because the storage is full so it simply never ack's any moves no matter the app). Connecting it to the Mac App doesn't work because it just cycles through thousands of random positions (in the g and h file only) which basically locks everything out.
Does anyone know a hardware button press/reset combination which can either factory reset or delete the entire storage from the board itself?

joernupbde

I don't see any way for Chessconnect to pick up random positions from lichess. Nor a way for it to fill up the memory of your board.

But there is a reset button on the Chessnut Air. Its underneath a small hole next to the speaker with a small reset symbol underneath.

Now that 3.3 is out and seems to be working quite well, I have started thinking about what's next. There are some smaller points on my list. I am going to try and integrate iChessOne, make Chess960 work, analysis board on lichess, things like that.

But there are some bigger steps on which I would like to hear your opinion. Therefore, I have clicked together a small survey in order to get a feeling for what should be the next major step.

Thanks I got it to work. I had to leave it connected overnight until it buffered out all the "positions" it loaded (e.g. blinking random positions in the rightmost 2-3 columns about 3 times a second). After that, I could use the App to delete the 20 games in the system (which were all one move "invalid" games). I also did a reset in there.
After that, I connected ChessConnect again, dealt with me forgetting to permission the API key to use the eBoard and played a test game. Works great!

@joernupde: I told you before that when I choose "NEW" on my King Performance after a game was finished, all leds where blinking, and I had to turn off the Chesslink or the board, and put it on again. In the mean time I found out what is happening. And maybe this is something for your FAQ.

After finishing a game on Chess.com, you have the ability to review your game. This review is opened in a new browser tab, with...guess what...The board disconnected. After pressing "NEW" on the board, all LED's are blinking and I had to turn off/on the Chesslink or the board.

The solution is very simple. Just close all browser tabs, except the one in which you started Chess.com, and the board is still connected. Then click on "Play" on Chess.com. And then press "NEW" on the board. In this case everything is reset as normal, and you can continue playing without resetting anything.

I just wanted to let you know this.

Best regards,

Hi Martin,

that's great! Thanks for letting me know. I'll check, if I can somehow fix this in Chessconnect. Now that I know, what's going on, that should be possible.

Have any of you tried connecting the Millennium eOne or Supreme 55 (with chess link) over Bluetooth? Is that supported or do I need to use a USB cable?

Rsava

The eOne should be Bluetooth (I think I tested that one a little).

Once my board gets charged up enough I will test again to make sure.

Rsava

Just checked, BT for the eOne.

Sorry, don't have a Supreme 55 to test.

CFossa

Do you need an app to connect eOne to the PC? It shows up in my BT devices but won't connect directly. When using with my phone, it needs an app.

Rsava

No, there is no app needed.

You also do not connect to your computer BT. If it is there, remove it.

The Chessconnect extension connects directly to the eOne via BT but it does it on it's own.

joernupbde

eOne and Chesslink is supported. Both Bluetooth and USB. (USB not yet on Android) 😎
