Chessmaster

I have chessmaster 9 and I couldn't be happier with it, but I don't know if their are any complications with vista and chessmaster 9.

I have Vista and Chessamster 10 and I've had no problems. Runs with no errors or problems, lessons run fine, games run fine, and no crashes. Chessmaster 10 is my first chess program since Chessmaster 5000 (just getting back into playing after an absence of many years) and I highly recommend it.

I have purchased every chessmaster ever made including the most recent Grandmaster edition and they all work fine with vista. The best thing is it is only 20 dollars U.S.worth every penny...in my opinion.

If you are a tight budget, you can get CM9000 for like $10, and it runs on Vista, just needs a patch for the help file:
"""Q: I'm using Chessmaster 9000 on Windows Vista, and the Help file isn't working. What's wrong?
A: On Windows Vista, the Help file for Chessmaster 9000 (and older versions) will not work, as winhlp32.exe is not shipped with Vista. However, you can download it here."""

IMO, for the money, its hard to beat CM9000.....yes, it is not the "best" or "strongest" chess program, but I really enjoy experimenting with all the personalities, and creating my own......and the Josh tutorials are great....

I really want to buy a version of Chessmaster but I'm not sure which one will mork on my computer. I was going to get Chessmaster 10, but I heard that it doesn't work well with Vista. Comments on the program itself are more than welcome. I've only used the program once but I really liked it.

Hey , I've got chessmaster 10 working in Vista nooo problem !!...whatsoever.
Very happy with it.

Chessmaster grandmaster edition. It supports both the Vista and Xp. It is also the most rescent chessmaster.

I just got Chessmaster 11, and it's really great....although to be fair, I haven't any experience with any other programs.

That is really great to know. I heard that some of the patches made the program glitch. -^.^-

I have also heard that some of the personalities have a different ratings than what they play at. And it doesn't have that great of a chess database, and is better for training. I would like to hear from some experts what they think of chessmaster.

Chessmaster I think it is the best "all in one" solution but not necessarily the best in other aspects of chess study. I have CM11. The best as far as the strongest engine is Rybka 3. It is even stronger if you use the Rybka 3 opening book by Noomen. There are many free engines and free interfaces as well so if you wanted to go the route of least expense you could do just fine. I also have Fritz 11 and I use the Deep Rybka 3 engine with the Fritz interface. This is very near and similar if not exactly the same as the Rybka 3 Chessbase version. The Chessbase Rybka 3 version is a great tool for analysis. I think it's the best for analysis. It is very powerful for digging in deep so to speak. If I were going to recommend any 2 chess programs I would recommend ChessMaster 10 or 11 and then I'd recommend Rybka 3 with the Chessbase interface. Rybka has its own new interface called Aquarium which I have no experience with so I can't opine about that one.
Chessbase 10 is a database that is an excellent tool for study and reference but I don't think it is the best for pure analysis like Rybka3. The Chessbase 10 does come with a database of >3.5 million games and it does have an earlier version of the Fritz engine as well as Crafty. It is relatively pricey compared to CM and Rybka 3 but there is a TON of information in there. If I were to add a 3rd purchase to my chess studies it would be Chessbase 10. It really depends on how much $$ you want to invest and how deep you want to go in your pursuit of chess knowledge and study.

Re: personalities in chessmaster having inaccurate ratings....I'd agree with that. There is one character, marius, who is rated at 1033 (or something like that) who I just couldn't beat....I'd been working my way up through the lower characters, but hit a brick wall when i got to him. Eventually, I just gave up and tried the character above him, and found he was easy to beat. I kept doing this til I got to the characters in the mid 1200's, where it started to get really hard for me. Last night I beat a character rated at 1274, then got beaten by Marius again.
Still, its a great program for a beginner like me.....tutorials are good, and you can practice all parts of your game with it.
