Ulfnednar,

A lot of text for sure, hopefully it's helpful information about the future of Chess notation. I wanted to give users an overview of the value I am bringing to the chess community for notating chess tournaments.

JoeyTroy

Just an update, the USCF accepted our application and manuals and has asked to ship in our devices for further certification. We have shipped them off as of 9/29/2017!

Good luck!  Hope you get it approved.  Is it possible to use the device for other things once it's been initialized for your program?  Otherwise, the cost is pretty high since the cost of the Nexus 6 has to be added.  But anyway, even if it can't be a multi-purpose device, it is nice to have more competition in this area (many younger players, e.g. 5-6 yr olds just can't write well enough to notate; even my 7yr son has a hard time writing small enough to fit the event scroe sheets).

Ah no one is plugging their phone into my laptop. Send me the game in an email is fine.

JoeyTroy

mgx9600,

Thanks for the feed back. Once the Nexus 6 is reloaded it can only be used for notation. The price is a little steep but the Nexus 6 is coming down in price. I found 18 mint condition Nexus's for $149.00 on eBay that I sent to my customers yesterday but has since sold out. Here is one in good condition for $139.85 so based on that price with the my software at $19.00 + shipping & handling your looking at less then the price of a PlyCounter which you can't even buy right now.

I have more information on my site about deals to find cheap Nexus 6's and send out emails when I see big deals via my mailing list and post on FaceBook. I was able to snag two Nexus's with broken rear camera's for $101.72 which other than the camera was in mint condition which make it super affordable when you can find a deal like that.

Also now with the Google Pixel 2 line being announced tomorrow 10/4/2017 and the fact Google is no longer releasing updates for the Nexus 6 as September 2017, we should see the Nexus 6 device drop in price to a reasonable rate as it will be 5 generations old after tomorrow's event. Based on those things this will be the cheapest and also most robust software for electronic notation on the market. The next big thing is getting the USCF approval and then working with FIDE next. Here is hoping happy.png

RMChess1954,

It doesn't work like a phone at all. When it's all said and done it's simply a thumb drive when you plug it in to a PC that can not be formatted or modified to execute files. The way Google has written the Android OS is it sets aside separate partitions which the user doesn't have access to write too accept the user partition. There is a partition for the OS which is secured, a partition for the application which is secured, and a partition for user storage. The only thing being written to the user storage partition is PGN's and PDF's from the application.

Believe it out not It's actually one of the most secure Android devices on the planet after I install our customer operating system as it can't surf the web, it can't do mms or text, it can't install any applications and it can not send email in our out. It only offers an SSH encryption to connect to our servers to download updates and will not install the update if it doesn't have our 2048-bit RSA Key signed around the update package. It's very secure and has been tested against all the top rooting kits that developers have created out on the net and each one has failed each and every time.

Rsava

So if it needs an update, it must be shipped back to you every time? Who pays for that shipping?

JoeyTroy

Rsava,

No the update is done via the Wi-Fi. There is an area in the application called update under that area of the application there is a button you press to check for updates and then it downloads via an SSH tunnel. Once downloaded you run the installer and it updates the application. All updates are also 100% free and we will never charge for them even as we add more features to the application. More information can be found online under our support section, we have manuals and videos of the device updating. https://chessnoter.com/support/

We have just released version 1.1.0 of ChessNoteЯ, which includes several new features:

  • FIDE Support - Ability to create FIDE tournaments and have Arbiter sign PDF
  • Club Support - Ability to create a Club tournament so the user won't need to sign a PDF for club games (a PGN will still be created)
  • The tournament creation page now lists tournament type for USCF, FIDE, CLUB
  • (=) - Draw Option added to tournament game when player offers a draw
  • Time Track - Tracks the amount of time taken to move. Can be seen within the current game on the moves fragment and also on review games and in the PGN
  • Fix Move - Lets you fix a single move and does not overwrite other moves
  • Step Back - When adding a tournament, step back can be selected to revise the input or color of opponent (if a move is made you can no longer use step back)
  • Fixed keyboard on ratings so the arrow is listed to move to the next field
  • Review games - Now has tournament type listed and final score of game
Follow the link below to find a video suite of all the new update features.

the price is far to high, i pay for a smartphone and dont use most of it... no more words needed.
and having to buy it send it (maybe from europa) so much afford and in 1 or two years the nexus 6 will be gone and what than?
dont get me wrong i would love to have such a device, and 100 thumps up for you effort, but only if it is an own product for a reasonable price.
JoeyTroy

mjr-c,

Nexus 6's are trending at $144.00 on eBay and I have seen some as low as $110.00. Between that price plus our software ($19.95+shipping) it's the cheapest notation device on the planet. Also with the Nexus 6's if and when it dies (I have had mine for 3 years and it's still going strong) there is plenty of places that work on them and there is parts everywhere online for batteries, boards, screens, etc. You won't find that with any other notation device that has hit market. It's all in what you consider a value to your chess game. I find if I can save more time putting in the right move the first time I'm getting more time than my opponent. Next time you play look at how long it takes your opponent to pick up a pencil and notate each move. It's taking my users roughly 1-2 second to notate each move which saves you time and headache. Good luck 👍

as i sad the idea is great and its benefits are not questioned!!!
but basing it on an old smartphone i should now buy from ebay first is a 100% killer for me - you asked for feedback so take it

The problem is that the electronic Chess notation market is not big at all.  Having a dedicated device made only for this, with the higher quality options we would want has to be expensive because it is going to be such a low volume of devices.

I am Ron S. from Peoria, Illinois of the owners that gave a review for Joey.  And yes, I have owned the eNotate which used an old Dell Axim PDA with their program, as well as a PlyCounter.  And I had the opportunity to use and work with, and on, a Monroi device that a local father asked me to help them with.

Sure, the Monroi is or was a manufactured, dedicated device only for score keeping of Chess games.  At the time I used it, 5 years ago, the processor was very slow and the memory was only 512mB.   The father was a computer programmer for Caterpillar and both he and his son thought the Monroi was broken.  It worked but it was very slow to process the moves and other functions.  Also, the Monroi cost about $400, and that was quite a few years ago.  The display was small as well.

The PlyCounter also is a dedicated device but it has a small screen and used older technology that demanded a stylus to work properly.  Yes, they did come out with a second generation that was a touch screen but pulled that because it didn't work properly and it has now been well over 8 months with them not offering any device for sale.

What Joey has done is to completely take over the functioning of the device.  It has no phone options at all to the point where the sound is disabled completely for the device.  There is no way that anyone can install an app or anything on it because he has totally locked up the operating system to make this device a completely dedicated Chess score keeping device.

The screen is large, very large and also very easy to use in entering moves and so forth.

I have talked with friends that have contacted suppliers in China and elsewhere and the cost for hardware with the size and quality of this device would be quite expensive.

PhillipTheTank

Don't see the point of this.  It's in the same realm, legality-wise as just using any device you already own with ynotate on it, which costs $1.  If it gets certified, sure, but unless I missed it, it hasn't been.  I see that it has been submitted, but until it is actually certified, I don't see an advantage to having one over what I already use, and am allowed to use at pretty much every tournament I've ever played in.

Rsava

@PhillipTheTank - you have not been stopped - yet.

You may eventually. What if you have no way if keeping score when they tell you no - which they can because you are using an electronic device that is not certified.

What Mr. Troy will have when it finally gets certified is a device that they cannot tell you can't be used. Big difference.

PhillipTheTank

I believe I mentioned that in my post.  When it gets certified, it will be different.  It hasn't been, and there's no promise it will be.  Big difference.

(also, lol @ what if I have no way of keeping score when they tell me no -- pretty sure pencil and paper will work fine, just like it would when they tell me no for using the item described in the thread)

Rsava

Well, none of us thought it would not be different when it gets certified. Not sure why you would have gotten that idea. But it will get certified eventually.

And lol, unless you didn't bring anything wih you to keep score. Arrogance breeds more arrogance.

"I have my $1 app on my phone and I have never been denied using it. I don't need to bring anything but that. Hey, they won't let me use my $1 app on my phone that also includes Shredder. Give me a pen and paper."

"Stinks to be you, doesn't it?"

PhillipTheTank

I have no idea what on earth your post means.

Well, none of us thought it would not be different when it gets certified. Not sure why you would have gotten that idea. But it will get certified eventually.

You certainly thought I didn't realize it would be different when it gets certified, since you made a post explaining how it would be different when it does.  Oddly, you didn't mention it hasn't been certified.  You only insist that it will, which I don't know how you would know.  Sure, I think it probably will, but there is no guarantee.  The entire point is selling this thing before it is certified is silly.  It has literally no advantages over a $1 app.

>And lol, unless you didn't bring anything wih you to keep score. Arrogance breeds more arrogance.

You must be kidding.

>I have my $1 app on my phone and I have never been denied using it. I don't need to bring anything but that. Hey, they won't let me use my $1 app on my phone that also includes Shredder. Give me a pen and paper."

"Stinks to be you, doesn't it?"

I don't know who you are quoting and the quote makes no sense in any context of this conversation.  I have no idea what you are trying to accomplish.

I will reiterate that this device, as it currently stands, has no advantages over a $1 app.  If you are considering purchasing this, you should absolutely at least wait until at has been certified.  If you dispute any of that, at least try to make sense in your next post.
