ChessNutTech offers a set of 34 recognition chips (RFID tags) for about $40 that you could use to turn any chess pieces you fancy into ones that would work with the board.

Theoretically yes, but practically it is not that easy task - they are really DYI. You have to do a lot of wood work by yourself, buy some felt and make everything go together. You have to do 34 pieces and make every single work, if you break any in the process you have to buy a whole new set as it is not possible to buy single pieces except for queens.

Even buing a suitable piece set can be challenging - the size can be of an issue.

Honestly I think that those chips will work much better with some fancy, custom 3d-printed pieces. I can immagine some great sets being printed specifically to have already the chip dimensions incorporated in the design.

All very good points.  I think this is a project for those people that want something different than what Chessnut will offer.

To give people an idea of what's possible here's a set from someone in the facebook group.  He also shared videos of the process.

Is it secure to download the android app and install it without using the Playstore?

First impression: Great!

Good review.  Could have been 5 minutes longer I felt and covered some other things but you did a good job.

It's a bit "ugly", but it is safe.  Just make sure you download it from the manufacturer's website.  Given that the iOS version of the app is on the Apple Play Store, I don't think that there is anything nefarious here.  Rather, I suspect that the manufacturer simply didn't invest the time in addressing whatever it is that the Play Store needed for their app to be included and this was simply a pragmatic solution.

Thanks! I also thought so already. Did you try both WhitePawn and Chessnut? Does anybody know the differences? Nice review by the way

Can anyone confirm if you can use lichess study with the board? (I mean to set up the board physically on any position and go into study so that the position is taken from the board)

Yes, I can confirm that, however the position analysis has to be done via Lichess interactive chessboard (that is, moves made by the Chessnut board get missed, reason why I prefer Chess PGN Master). Surely you can play the position against the Chessnut AI.

Sorry, but simply can't recommend this until they polish the application.
The board mechanics are fine but the app:
Doesn't allow you to enter player's names.
Does not have an export feature for games.
Stops recording moves once time has expired.
Does not save settings for games.
Records the wrong player as losing when resigning.
Disconnects Bluetooth after each game completes.

I mean....really?
Waiting for urgent software update to resolve these problems.

The issues with the Chessnut PC app (for the Mac) are why I'm still trying to find a more serious database/analysis/UCI engine plug-in program I can use with my board on a Mac.   I like Shredder but only the Windows version supports DGT eBoards (works for the Chessnut). Chess Explorer is the only Mac app that natively supports an eBoard and, of course, it only works with Millennium, not DGT (argh).  Chessnut and Certabo both have bespoke apps for Windows and Macs but neither program has any real depth since they are just trying to tick off the "we support" box not to create a full blown database program.

Are you talking about OTB? I've played hundreds of games on lichess with the Chessnut Air so none of the issues you talk about apply.  I'm guessing this is for playing over the board.  Have you thought about going to the Chessnut discord channel and posting videos of the issues you're having so they can be fixed?

Quick question, would this thing work with Dasher or Internet Chess Club?

I cannot say for sure but Chess for Android app supports online play on ICC or FICS.

Really great app wink

Is there a specific Chessnut forum?

I can't find the Chessnut discord channel if there is one.
