Computer annotations not helpful?

I don't know if I am using the software wrong but I don't find the automatic annotations helpful from Fritz or other software. They just say XXX is a blunder or XXX is a great move, but never explains WHY.

IMKeto

That's because engines are incapable of explaining "why"

Haha well that's what I thought might be the case, but it is so disappointing! I thought by now, 2020, with COVID and everything (that was a joke), we would have smart enough algorithms and fast enough computers to do WHY... So the automated annotation only judges based on positional and material calculations?

If you want to learn and understand the "why behind moves?  Hire a coach.  Chess engines are great learning tools, but as good as they are, they fail miserably when it comes to explaining things.

Good that human coaches will still have jobs, unlike many other jobs in the coming times.

https://decodechess.com/ is a service (no affiliation) that gives some human explanations for chess engine moves, I've found it to be pretty good.

Here's an example of the analysis interface:

Thanks! Coincidentally I just happened upon that from reading another discussion at the same time you posted it. Synchronicity? :-)

I had heard about that site, but never really checked it out until now.  I have to say that it does seem well worth the price.

centaurme

Two free per day! Great price LOL

Oh, two free decodes, not two free GAME decodes. Haha. Means two moves are decoded. Guess I need to sign up and pay. Looks worthwhile.
