Convert Fritz DB to Stockfish

Thanks Nils. I will mess around with the settings. But, to be honest, I'm not sure my chess skills need even 1 full processor to top.Laughing

Well, to be honest, the copy I have is cracked. I only tried it to see if it was something that would be useful to me. It is, but I can't afford to buy a legit copy, so I want to use something that is legal.

You don't have to buy the latest version. You can find older versions for a few dollars. It will do the job.

Here is fritz11 at 5.5 pounds:

And even Fritz13 for less than 20 pounds:

Thanks yair. I have Scid installed and running now. I will try it out and see how it goes.

Compared to ChessBase, Scid is the better chess database. I once tried Chessbase (v11) and i did not like how the tree window there works. It shows games twice, it has no progress bar, and it is slow with huge databases. In Scid, the blue progress bar shows when tree window loading will be done. Also the database editing features in Scid are better than in Chessbase. And it handles huge databases faster.

There are some bugs. Hope they get fixed soon.

Thanks for all your input.

Does anyone know how to get Scid to analyze a complete game and add alternate lines to the PGN?

Scid cannot do this, Scid vs. PC can.

(but Scids (v.4.5.2) database handling (auto-filtering) is better, that is why i use Scid and not Scid vs. PC)

SOrry, I do have Scid vs. pc. But I cannot find anything that looks like it can do this.

I was wrong. Both can do it, of course. Open engine window, there click 'annotate' button.

Try out Scid. Yes, Scid vs. PC has fixed two or three bugs but removed a lot of useful features. Many database features are gone, repertoire editor is gone, one-click move entering is gone, etc etc.

Is this what you need?

Thanks granitoman, that is exactly what I was looking for.

Also, just to make sure I am understanding the analysis properly:

+1.0 means White is up a pawn

-1.0 means Black is up a pawn

Is this correct?

yep.

If it is of any help to you, you can try these 4 things to get the Fritz game to be "universal" pgn.

One is try loading the pgn into Arena, then after you do so, go into the position menu and click copy pgn to clip board. It should make it into a pgn that will go into Stockfish.

The second option might not work but, if it does, if should be relatively easy and reliable, with some options to edit the pgn. Load the pgn into one of the boards in a dummy thread post, perhaps in a private group forum. I have a private workshop where I do stuff like this. Next, after you post it, simply go to the post and click the get pgn option. It should convert it to the chess.com pgn type and that should work in Stockfish.

The next option is to take the Fritz pgn file and load it into a Windows notepad program. You should be able to compare the way the pgn is situated as compared with another chess.com pgn file that loads into Stockfish. Find the differences and edit them. You can even create random pgn's for experiments this way with notepad. Make sure if you try to do that, when saving the files, click all file types and add  ".pgn" to the end of the file name, before clicking the save button.

The last option is probably the most difficult but, I guarantee you it will work. There is also a program called ChessPad2. It will allow you to open a board with the starting position and begin making the moves of a game through to it's conclusion. Then it will give you the option to generate a simple pgn.

I think you can do this option with Arena also but, I have noticed that Arena is a bit willfull over opponents, time controls, auto editting moves, etc, so make sure you have your ducks in a row before trying it.

Thanks Paradox.

I suppose I should have mentioned I solved that issue. I just created a PGN dB in Fritz and imported that into SCID.

You guys know if Arena orStockfish actually have a dB system? I have one rather large PGN file that takes a couple of minutes to load with Arena. I will use it often and would rather have it instantly available and searchable.

Arena's DB functions are very basic and primitive. I don't think it even has the capability to search positions.

Yet I can't even understand how it even works! lol!

To use the Arena database, you need to put all of the pgn's from the games you wish to load into it, into one Windows Notepad file. Then just load it like youwould a PGN from a game. They will all pull up in a list. This is the only realistic way to get the ELO estimate feature to work also.

No big deal. Perhaps someone else will find the information useful. I started to realize that the advice I gave the guy who couldn't figure out how to make use of the Arena database, might work for you. You can gather multiple PNG's into one Windows Notepad file and should be able to load it into a database. If it is worth it's salt, it should seperate the games by default, due to the characters that surround the information.

I associated PGN files with SCIDvPC, but when I click on one, it opens a new instance of SvP. Does anyone know how to make it use the already running instance?

Avatar of granitoman

I think you have to open in the file folder of Scid instead of double click.

Avatar of kleelof

Well, the thing is I assocaited the PGN files with SvP. SO when I dbl click on a PGN file, it automatically opens SvP. However, if SvP is already open, instead of opeing in the already opened instance, it opens a new one so I have 2 running.
