You don’t have to scan it. If I find a lot of photos of it and the dimensions of the pieces, I could replicate it as much as possible.

The last original one of these went for $280. I know because I was out bid with $275 lol.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Weighted-Complete-Chess-Set-4-Inch-King-/373040190890?nma=true&si=pNaOZajArmEqTpdtuhUoq0zM5Dk%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Wow. That's some expensive chipped up plastic. It was advertised as a unknown. Why so much, Ron?

House of Staunton sells a Windsor design set. It is very close to the original, which I used to own but gave to my son, who eventually lost it. (I have no relation to HOS other than as a customer.)

Original Windsor castle plastic sets are VERY hard to find in good condition. The material was awful and over the decades became very brittle. Too bad they didn't use quality plastic like Drueke. Drueke's Players Choice premiered at the National Open in Las Vegas in 1965. 100 sets were put into use. All 100 were bought after the tournament. I know because in a vintage ad (May '66 issue) in Chess Review mentions this.

Yes but it's made of wood unlike the original That is what turned me off.

Joel has a YouTube channel that is entirely devoted to 3D printing. He did a review on the Polysmooth product line.

Update:

I received most of the upgrades I ordered Saturday and installed them. With the upgrades came the wood fill, which I printed my first pawn with:

Pawn after some sanding

Tomorrow once the last upgrade comes in, I'll be able to print a full set. I've been experimenting with different pieces and found a good set to sell first (It's under Creative Commons Attribution license). I may be able to design my own sets based on past models, but patent and copyright issues make that prospect murky. I'll update in the next couple of days with a picture of the full set. Almost ready to take orders!

What copyright issues are their? Its not like they have a hard and fast patent especially here in the US. All you have to do is make a minor change on one piece of a set.

Evidently you haven’t delved into the legal issues. This article show Just how complicated things can get: https://m.all3dp.com/the-legal-issues-of-3d-printing-a-chess-set/

Even though the particular case wasn’t in the US, the problem is still the same. For example, Disney is strict on protecting their copyright. If you commercially sell a 3D model of Darth Vader, you could be prosecuted. The only solution I can see so far would be to contact the makers of the set and ask permission.

So tell me , how come chess sets are copied from other sets? The article you gave an example is a case in Germany.

Avatar of x-9140319185
Well, I would guess the reproductions are approved by the owners of the patent, or the patent was no longer in effect around the 70 something year mark.
Avatar of crusaderwabbet

70  is Germanys law. Their are no patents on copied sets. The Indians copy all different past makers of sets. Nobody is going to take you to court over a chess set.

By the way you will have to take it up a notch to compete with ifekalis sets.

We may differ on the patent issue, but we do agree the piece quality can be better. I’ve been working on that. With better 3D models, a Xacto set, and a bit of wood stain, it shall be good.

Well good to know there mac. Frank had to do a lot of financial catching up after that. Like I said nobody is going to sue over a chess set. If that was the case the Indians would be out of business long ago. Also making a minor change to a design would make it not a copy.

Hi I am in desperate need of a set of custom 3D printed chess pieces - my son received a set of musical symbols/notes for Christmas from his sister and I accidentally dropped them and broke most of them. Can anyone assist me? I have a picture of the set I can send.
