DGT Pegasus?

Chessnut is much better than Pegasus and even than Millenium. My experience proves it too.

It's true that the Chessnut Air is technically superior to the DGT Pegasus in one key area: full piece recognition. But that's pretty much where its advantages end, in my opinion.

In almost every other aspect, the DGT Pegasus wins for me:
- Larger squares and bigger pieces
- Nicely weighted pieces
- Much better LED indication system
- Overall much more elegant and beautiful design

By comparison, the Chessnut Air uses an older, dated piece design and has a strong yellowish tint on white pieces.

Price-wise, in Europe the DGT Pegasus is also cheaper than the Chessnut Air right now.

The only question mark is general reliability. There aren’t many recent reviews, and some older ones mention connectivity or stability issues with the Pegasus. That said, there are also many videos (like this one I'm sharing) where people use it for long without any problems.

For a plastic electronic chess set, the DGT Pegasus looks awesome.

Don’t you agree? Or is the full piece recognition a total deal-breaker for you?
Curious to hear your thoughts!

Pegasus is a good looking unit, nice weight to the pieces. I should use mine more. Just charged it up, will give it a go.

I used to have a Pegasus, it was a good piece of kit, nice sized board, nice pieces and very obvious move indicators with the flashing board. It worked well for me at Lichess and Chess.com . The only thing it needed to be perfect was piece recognition.

I moved to a Chessnut Go. I like the piece recognition and the pieces /feel/ weighty due to the magnets giving them a bit of extra pull. I also like that it is movable mid-game due to those magnets again. It /could/ do with being a little bit larger but since it's really designed for travel I forgive it for that.

Using the Pegasus since one week now, and I must say it is addictive. Very fun to play online, vs bots or humans, works flawlessly and bears to the essentials about chess. No distractions whatsoever as in many other e-boards.

Bought one for my kid for Christmas. I just opened it to check that everything was OK, and it worked perfectly.
I only noticed that when capturing, I had to remove the captured piece first, wait a second, and then move my piece to that square for the move to be recognised. Not sure if there's a better way to do this.
- How do you handle captures?
Other than that, no issues at all. I played on Chess.com using ChessConnect without any problems.

Avatar of Tomson52

@Skypyxis Indeed capturing works best if you first remove the captured piece, no need to wait one full second, should go swiftly .. Enjoy !

They are good. Chessconnect is the best bet. However, you will need to repeat the odd move from time to time. I should use mine, it gathers dust while I play on the computer. The only thing is the battery. It doesn't last long and it doesn't hold a charge for very long, so if you leave it for a few days, you'd have to charge it or use it with the cable attached.

I had a similar issue and fixed it by re-calibrating some time ago.

The chessup 2 is way better

Avatar of Kromok2

Really ? I have my doubts.

Avatar of Skypyxis

Chessup 2 is twice the price and a bit ugly.

Avatar of leffenoso

i have owned basically every board similar to this that exists. square off pro, dgt pegasus, square off grand kingdom set (the auto moving piece one) and chessup 2. chessup 2 is the ONLY one that i haven't had issues with, and by far the best experience (even surpassing the self moving set!!)

Avatar of Tomson52

Pegasus is beautifully crafted, elegant and doesn't distract you from focusing to the game. Never had any issue until now. Cheers for DGT !

The Pegasus is great but I moved to the Chessnut Go. It adds piece detection and has great portability and functionality.

Avatar of Kromok2

The Chessnut has pieces recognition, the Pegasus got pieces detection, I don't see any real "plus" on one tech over the other wink

Avatar of BaronVonChickenpants

The bonus to piece recognition is you can set up a position by just placing the pieces. The Pegasus knows a piece is there, but not what is what

Avatar of Tomson52

Setting up positions on Pegasus is irrelevant because it is meant for playing, not analysing

Irrelevant for you, sure. Irrelevant in general? Hardly. As with almost all purchases, it comes down to your requirements, your preferences, and your wallet.

Personally, I dislike the look of the Pegasus pieces. That would be true for me even if they were executed in wood.

But I fully recognize that some people will like that look and some people won't care about the lack of individual piece recognition.

Avatar of Tomson52

@madratter7 what I mean is that it is not even possible to analyse with Pegasus, it is meant for playing online or live on the board with a friend, one can retrieve the game in pgn format and then analyse it on another platform ..
