Alec849,
Yes, the Cherniaev and Meynell book is a good book, but not a Great Book!
The analysis are very simple and in complex positions and sharpening tactics, fails in finding opportunities for attack and defense. A good book to "show" Janowsky, nothing more.
To study Janowsky's genius two booksare required:
A great book, written by one who is now one of the greatest Russian historians Chess Sergei Voronkov (in collaboration with Plisetsky (collaborator Kasparov in book 1 of My Great Predecessors) "David Janowsky" which has never been translated into English language - unbelievable stupidity and ignorance of chess books publishers!
Another, Janowsky Bible: Vabanque - "Dawid Janowsky (1868 - 1927)"
The definitive book on this great player
Great biography and great games analysis. One of the best chess books of all time. In German!

David Janowski by Alexander Cherniaev
This book features a selection of David Janowski`s best games (61 altogether) he was very good in the middlegame and a devastating Chess tactician but he wasn`t too good in the endgame. Janowski had a very high opinion of his abilities at the chess board he considered Emmanuel Lasker Capablanca and himself to be the only true masters he was quite a dandy and vain about his personal appereance and was known to carry a gold cain around with him. Janowski`s sponsor was Leo Nardus (a very close friend of Frank Marshall) in the book it says that they had a falling out after Janowski insulted Nardus when he told him that of all the bad players he met Nardus was the absolute worst Nardus took it bad and stopped sponsoring him.
I enjoyed the book Janowski`s wins are very beautiful and instructive.
