Can any of you guys shed any light on these sets that are on sale at Designer Chess?

Any feedback will be appreciated?

More of a Staunton fan myself but they look nicely carved.  Obviously the flamboyant knights are the centerpiece of the set.  If you like them then that's reason enough to buy a set I suppose.  ChessBazaar has similar sets, at similar prices as do most of the major shops.  I've been tempted to purchase similar sets because of the knights but have always held off because I'm not a big fan of the rest of the pieces.  I get most of my stuff used off Ebay but I know that requires a lot of patience and if you're in the mood to buy "gratification delayed is gratification denied".  Laughing Good luck!

They are both nice fancy sets.! I don't think Elvis ever played Chess but, I could be wrong. Alekhine more than likely never had a set like the one pictured and again, I could be wrong. Imaginative marketing I think is at play here.!

The knight's bodies in the first set look like they got a eating disorder, but I like the mean looking heads...

When does ornate become rediculous? Perhaps when the knight becomes so over inflated that it exceeds the size of the chess square. So who has the right-of-way when two opposing knights occupy adjacent squares? And do we really need to start using 3" chess boards to accommodate these Clydesdales?

Thanks guys. The names don't matter to me but here is what I am looking at.

If you have a look at Zacharus at the bottom of the page, it looks very similar to the Elvis, but poor craftsmanship. Elvis at designerchess with way better craftsmanship, but then again do I need a fancy knight.

It all boils down to your choice & your money.! They all look OK to me. I think they are a little pricey but, you only live once IMO.

Added... I see that you are a new member of the site... And of course not sure if you are also new to the game or collecting... First rule... Buy what you like but research before you do. Some sets you didn't like today you might end up loving tomorrow. Ya can't go wrong though with a classic staunton or dubrovnik and ya may wanna review a bunch of threads before buying as well especially with the cost of the sets you are looking at currently...

ROBB_CHESS

PS...Look up the following sites for starters and review some of the classic stauntons and dubrovniks as many are in the price range or close of your posted sets.... These are a good start... Good luck !

If we are droping store names.

I had a nice experience with thechessstore.com and many people here are big fans of e-bay.

However, I have a trick to compare diferent stores, in terms of prices.

I find a set that is very common and compare the price of the same set trough the diferent stores. In my case I chose to do this with a set that is sometimes name the "tournament club" set, sometimes it is call the "championship" set and sometimes the "german knight" set, sometimes something else.

So this is how I do it:

This is the set From thechessstore:

http://www.thechessstore.com/#!category/.00010-wood-chess-sets.10-german-knight-staunton-chess-sets/

Same set from HOS:

http://www.houseofstaunton.com/chess-pieces/wooden-chess-pieces/the-championship-series-chess-set-3-75-king.html

Same set from chessbazar

http://www.chessbazaar.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=german

After a simple search on the designerchess website I found this set:

http://designerchess.com/Wooden-Chess-Pieces/Economy-Chess-Pieces/German-Staunton-Rosewood-3.75

I really like to compare this especific set, becouse you can't speculate about craftmanship quality value. You can, however compare diferent woods and sizes, and factor this on the price diference. Still a more clear comparation than with other sets.

I also must confess, I love this set. It is one of the most popular chess sets. My grandfather's set was one of this, and it is the set in wich I learned my first moves, when I was 5 years old. this set deserves a fanclub.

@htdavidht

Two different Chess sets with big differences yet very similar. I like thechessstore knight better, but then I like the open mouth on designerchess piece. I cannot afford any of them (probably can this one -- http://designerchess.com/Wooden-Chess-Pieces/Economy-Chess-Pieces/German-Staunton-Chess-Set-In-Golden-Rosewood-3-inches -- with no extra queens). I am awaiting a big check back from my dental insurance; I paid in full of which they cover 60% for braces, and hopefully I will make a nice purchase after.
