Arena is a free Graphical User Interface (GUI) for chess. It runs on Linux and Windows  http://www.playwitharena.de/   It supports the DGT boards and clocks. Add a UCI chess engine that lets you limit the level (ELO) and bingo you can play at the level you want on your DGT board.

Hi,

Took the plunge and ordered a DGT Smart board (with wooden pieces) and a DGT PI based on the comments here. I am getting tired playing all the time inside the house staring at the PC monitor.

.. and yes it was my $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Yes, in retrospect I'm happy I picked the Smartboard over the Centaur, there's just so much more flexibility. and many more options The lack of any ports on the Centaur for any communication with other devices I'm sure would have bothered me in the long run. Also, with the Smartboard I got automatic piece recognition and a nicer set of pieces to begin with (sure, I could have replaced the nasty plastic pieces on the Centaur myself, but now the problem doesn't even arise). I got the Smartboard plus the "Classic" pieces for the money the Centaur would have cost me. The adaptive strength was the one thing that the Centaur has in its favour, but I'm now running a downgradable version of Stockfish on my smart phone, and that does the job nicely, too.

This thread discusses a chess engine with adaptive strength.  Not sure if you can use it on your smart phone but poster says it can be used with Arena Chess (with a slight modification) that, as you know, works with your smart board.

Hope this helps...

Hi sound67,

Have you found out how to download the game from the SD card and then analyze it on the computer ?
Thanks

I own the DGT Bluetooth e board and my favorite way to use it is with Fritz 17 and Chessbase.

I haven't figured out how to do this yet.  I got Chessbase installed, but I did not know what to do from there.  I'm going to have to watch some Youtube on this I guess.  I'm more interested in playing against a computer and it telling me how that was a good or bad move, and then suggest something better.  It seemed to me that Chessbase wanted me to play a full game and then analyze it for me.  That will be helpful in the future, but right now I'm not that good!  It's very possible that I just don't know how to use it yet.

And yes, @RainerOR14, I'm happy with it!  I didn't plan on getting one so soon, but I did get a good deal.  I didn't get a DGT Pi, but I'm learning a lot about the Raspberry Pi and I'm working on connecting a direct cable to make my own.  It's a journey!

Does the option “Move Now!” from the "Game" drop down menu not work?

Did you solve the problem of Arena not replying to moves Sound67?

I was thinking that perhaps Arena was dropping into Edit mode when you tried to take the move back using the DGT board and insert a new move. The word Edit having a light coloured background between the two left hand windows is the only indication of this mode being active. Click the word Edit to disable it and the engine will resume.

I used to use the Edit mode when using Arena to record games between me and the Novag Citrine.
