DGT non Electronic Board & Beginners Guide!

Hi everyone! 😃

This is a bit of a long, story-esque post - So feel free to skip to the pics if you want (or just ignore!)

I thought I'd document my little journey as a complete noob to buying Chess equipment, in the hope that someone else might stumble upon it in future and it may save them a bit of a headache!

Starting Point:

Honestly, my initial budget was about £100 - I figured that would be enough to get a decent board and pieces; and to be fair - You can get a decent board and OK pieces within that price range. You tend to get better pieces if you buy separately, and don't buy a "set".

I soon realised that actually.... I didn't want to become a "collector" (famous last words), and I'd rather spend £200 on a really nice set (obviously still searching for the best price).

This is being written during the great stock shortage of "The Queens Gambit", so I'm not entirely sure what options there would have been available under normal circumstances.

Perhaps I ended up paying over the odds, or didn't get the widest choice - But in the end, I'm very happy with what I ended up with.

First Purchase:

I literally could not get through to any Chess company in the UK (Dec 2020) - I finally did speak to a chap at ChessBaron (UK), who was helpful, and I felt happy buying from him.

Shipping was super quick as well, arriving the following day, and all in all - Very pleased.

Board: https://www.chessbaron.co.uk/product/B1003/

£99.95

Pieces: https://www.chessbaron.co.uk/product/M6009/

£79.00

Initial Inspection:

I've documented my thoughts already in this thread.

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/new-board-and-pieces-acceptable-tolerance

Tl;DR..... I really wanted to like what I had, and looked to the experience of chess.com to soothe my concerns (spoiler alert, they didn't!) - The quality was "OK", but probably not where it needed to be for the cost.

The nail in the coffin was the attitude and response from ChessBaron - Not sure who it was specifically, but there wasn't a care in the world, they refused to pay for return shipping, and claimed the "damage" on the board (you can see in the pics), was from the "craftsmans tools".

They stated that all of their boards were like that, which is either a lie, or they are all poor quality (from a workmanship POV).

It was very much an attitude of "I'm selling so much stock right now, I don't need your custom" - Which is their prerogative.

Second Purchase:

It was only upon taking delivery of the second set, that I knew what good quality looked like, and how to evaluate the first set.

Board Decision:

So, I'd looked for a "solid wood board" initially - I don't know why, but I felt it would be more "premium".

Having spent £100 and received a very poorly executed board, I looked to the inlaid options, and there is one company that stands head and shoulders amongst the others it would appear.

Rechapados Ferrer

You can see their beautiful boards here: http://www.rechapadosferrer.com/en/tableros.html

Every comment I've seen on these boards is a good one. To make matters better, they aren't massively expensive either. You are looking at between £50 and £80 for a tournament board in the UK (depending on what trim you are going for etc) - You can spend a bit more and get the fancier ones, but they don't do it for me quite as much (not enough to justify the extra cost anyway).

So, having looked high and low, I opted for the DGT Non Electronic Chess Board (made by Rechapados Ferrer).

I should add... Comparing this side by side with the wooden board from ChessBaron - It definitely looks a little more matte, with a more "professional" finish. But that may not be to everyones tastes, as the all wood one does have a rustic charm to it (possibly "looks" more woody, but has way too many issues).

It was the design I liked the most, and it was easily obtainable from Librium Games - http://www.libriumgames.co.uk/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=73&product_id=95

Price £69.95 + £10 shipping

I have to say, Steve at Librium was really helpful - Top guy.

The pieces were bought from: https://www.chessmaze.co.uk/collections/chess-pieces/products/winchester-golden-rosewood-chess-pieces

They cost £99.95 (apparently on sale, down from £180).

Strangely, the exact same pieces were on sale at Official Staunton, who own ChessMaze (but for £162)

https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-pieces/products/the-winchester-golden-rosewood-chessmen

Either way, the pieces arrived the following day and they are gorgeous.

For £99 I'd love to see a more detailed set - They tick all the boxes I need.

So, in a nutshell, it was only when looking at other pieces and boards, that I could make a semi informed decision (and even then, I'm still woefully short on experience to make a properly informed decision).

My advice would be.... Buy a decent board (a nice inlaid/veneer one from Rechapados for £50-80).

But spend as much as you can on the pieces..... They really make a world of difference!

Thanks to everyone who commented previously - I'm sure it won't be the last time I dip my toe in the equipment water!

Here are a couple of comparisons, and the new set and board in action!

The shiny pieces are the new set (no idea what happened to the Knights being upside down!)

@MegaLumberjack, I didn't know the DGT Non Electronic Chess Board was made by Rechapados Ferrer. Was it labeled on the packaging or board as such? The board has a DGT black label on the side of the board, correct? Interesting.

Also. The second set you have in the pictures is not the Winchester set you linked to at ChessMaze and Official Staunton. Either the links are incorrect or they sent you the wrong set. In which case you lucked out because I MUCH prefer the looks of the set you DID receive (in the pics) over the Winchester set in the links.

itrenix

Yes I own the DGT non electronic and didnt know this.

It certainly is an amazing board in my opinion. I now have this as my main board and the DGT smart board in plastic for game entry and very happy with this combination.

How did I not see this!?

Looks like they sent me this set, with the knight from the one in my original link - https://www.chessmaze.co.uk/collections/chess-pieces/products/craftsman-deluxe-acacia-chess-pieces

But if you look at the site, it looks like a lot of the pieces are verrrrry similar (dare I say identical?), but the Knights are all different.

As for DGT and Rechapados, I actually spoke to the workshop in Spain, and they were really good at explaining what they do etc.

The DGT board is basically the Walnut Deluxe they have on their website (and yeah, it has the black plaque/logo on the side).

Funnily enough, I’d have probably bought the plain one if I could get it in time - But given how many DGT boards they must produce, I figured the tolerances would be excellent (and it certainly looks that way).

Back on the pieces, do you think they are the ones I sent in the link?

Would they mix and match a set like that?

Pawnerai

What you have is not the Craftsman Deluxe either. Aside from the knight being completely different, there are subtle differences in all the pieces. Look at the collar of your King, Queen, and Bishop. Thin, space, thick, thick. Look at your bishop's ball finial. It has a flat cut on the side. But like I said before, the set you received appears to be a very nice quality carving. Well worth £99.95. It would just be nice to know the name of the style.

itrenix

Very nice set either way.

Sorry to but in, however... @Pawnarai as you know I returned my Zegrab, not sure if you seen my post here but bought a new set happy.png took your advice and went to one of the suppliers you mentioned, shipped today and arrives Monday happy.png one more ticked off my list ha

OK, so there are some really small differences in some of the pieces and others I’m looking at.

Would it be unheard of to completely mix/match sets?

Of the set I “bought” the only one that matches is the Knight from what I can tell.

The other pieces all look much nicer on my set! 😂

I’m not sure I’ll be able to sleep until I know what the set is though!

Hey MegaLumberJack. Nothing wrong with mixing and matching, plenty people do that. I think its great as its a truly custom set them. Havent done this yet myself but plan to mix and match to create a 'perfect' set happy.png

MegaLumberjack

Hey @itrenix - Firstly, thanks for the inspiration for the DGT board. Great decision!

I meant is it unusual for a retailer to mix and match - I can’t find the set I have on any of the websites..... But the knight seems to be fairly common (in sets from £100 to £500), and some of the other pieces look similar to sets I’m looking at..... But none of them are 100% the same.

If anyone reads this and knows what set I have.... I’d be amazingly appreciative of some assistance!

itrenix

Hi MegaLumberjack.

No problem...its a fantastic board sure you will be happy for a long time with it.

Sorry, I mis read your post regarding the mixing and matching, and unfortunatly I cant answer that as I have no idea, so hopefully someone will chip in and enlighten us, as I am now curious to this!

yawnofthedead

Congrats on your new set up!! Looks great and I hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Definitely looks like a good quality board and pieces!

lotsoblots

Congrats! I *love* my DGT non-electronic board and I like my smaller Rechapados Ferrer board, too, despite it having shipped with a blemish in one light square.

itrenix
Hi lotsoblots. What was the blemish? I sent my electronic DGT back for issues and although I love my non electronic board, the maple squares have a very strong grain which although I love it, it’s very different from the electronic version which I find strange, as I would have thought grains of certain woods are or should be consistent. I have pictures of you want to compare
MegaLumberjack

So, I’ve looked all night and can’t find anything that it could be.
This is as close as I’ve found, but...

1. It’s from a different shop

2. It’s only a 3” King (mine is 4”) and I can’t find any 4” options.
What do you think, could this be it?

Can you post pics side by side and with those links. I am no expert but want to help however strugling scroling up and down with my detached retina sad.png

itrenix

and I am going to call upon my chess expert not on this site, who may be able to help.

MegaLumberjack

There you go 😀

Pawnerai

@MegaLumberjack, That's pretty damn close. I mean, I do see some slight slight discrepancies in the bishop. The cut in the mitre goes lower in the Windsor. Bishop collar spacing is off. Your pawns are a tiny bit more slender. Etc... BUT, your set is a full one inch taller than that Windsor set you linked to. And any super slight differences can be attributed to it being hand made by different sources. I think you should be comfortable in calling it a Windsor Staunton. For £99? Well done.

The blemish was on the 13.75" Rechapados Ferrer board. It's not a huge mark but I saw it immediately and I'm picky enough that it pretty much ruined the board for me. The vendor did offer to replace it but I didn't want to deal with the hassle of returning from the US -> UK and didn't want to make them pay the shipping for the replacement.

@Megalumberjack I am sorry you had a bad experience with your initial purchased items. I had a similar experience with some stuff I bought from Etsy. I know how frustrating that can be. I am glad you found something you liked. I have to say I really love the DGT non-e board. I did not know Rechapados Ferrer made it for DGT. I also like the pieces you received from Chessmaze. They look similar to my HoS 3.75" Collectors Series which is my favorite set. I like the bishops in your set a lot more though.
