@MegaLumberjack, I didn't know the DGT Non Electronic Chess Board was made by Rechapados Ferrer. Was it labeled on the packaging or board as such? The board has a DGT black label on the side of the board, correct? Interesting.
Also. The second set you have in the pictures is not the Winchester set you linked to at ChessMaze and Official Staunton. Either the links are incorrect or they sent you the wrong set. In which case you lucked out because I MUCH prefer the looks of the set you DID receive (in the pics) over the Winchester set in the links.
Hi everyone! 😃
This is a bit of a long, story-esque post - So feel free to skip to the pics if you want (or just ignore!)
I thought I'd document my little journey as a complete noob to buying Chess equipment, in the hope that someone else might stumble upon it in future and it may save them a bit of a headache!
Starting Point:
Honestly, my initial budget was about £100 - I figured that would be enough to get a decent board and pieces; and to be fair - You can get a decent board and OK pieces within that price range. You tend to get better pieces if you buy separately, and don't buy a "set".
I soon realised that actually.... I didn't want to become a "collector" (famous last words), and I'd rather spend £200 on a really nice set (obviously still searching for the best price).
This is being written during the great stock shortage of "The Queens Gambit", so I'm not entirely sure what options there would have been available under normal circumstances.
Perhaps I ended up paying over the odds, or didn't get the widest choice - But in the end, I'm very happy with what I ended up with.
First Purchase:
I literally could not get through to any Chess company in the UK (Dec 2020) - I finally did speak to a chap at ChessBaron (UK), who was helpful, and I felt happy buying from him.
Shipping was super quick as well, arriving the following day, and all in all - Very pleased.
Board: https://www.chessbaron.co.uk/product/B1003/
£99.95
Pieces: https://www.chessbaron.co.uk/product/M6009/
£79.00
Initial Inspection:
I've documented my thoughts already in this thread.
https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/new-board-and-pieces-acceptable-tolerance
Tl;DR..... I really wanted to like what I had, and looked to the experience of chess.com to soothe my concerns (spoiler alert, they didn't!) - The quality was "OK", but probably not where it needed to be for the cost.
The nail in the coffin was the attitude and response from ChessBaron - Not sure who it was specifically, but there wasn't a care in the world, they refused to pay for return shipping, and claimed the "damage" on the board (you can see in the pics), was from the "craftsmans tools".
They stated that all of their boards were like that, which is either a lie, or they are all poor quality (from a workmanship POV).
It was very much an attitude of "I'm selling so much stock right now, I don't need your custom" - Which is their prerogative.
Second Purchase:
It was only upon taking delivery of the second set, that I knew what good quality looked like, and how to evaluate the first set.
Board Decision:
So, I'd looked for a "solid wood board" initially - I don't know why, but I felt it would be more "premium".
Having spent £100 and received a very poorly executed board, I looked to the inlaid options, and there is one company that stands head and shoulders amongst the others it would appear.
Rechapados Ferrer
You can see their beautiful boards here: http://www.rechapadosferrer.com/en/tableros.html
Every comment I've seen on these boards is a good one. To make matters better, they aren't massively expensive either. You are looking at between £50 and £80 for a tournament board in the UK (depending on what trim you are going for etc) - You can spend a bit more and get the fancier ones, but they don't do it for me quite as much (not enough to justify the extra cost anyway).
So, having looked high and low, I opted for the DGT Non Electronic Chess Board (made by Rechapados Ferrer).
I should add... Comparing this side by side with the wooden board from ChessBaron - It definitely looks a little more matte, with a more "professional" finish. But that may not be to everyones tastes, as the all wood one does have a rustic charm to it (possibly "looks" more woody, but has way too many issues).
It was the design I liked the most, and it was easily obtainable from Librium Games - http://www.libriumgames.co.uk/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=73&product_id=95
Price £69.95 + £10 shipping
I have to say, Steve at Librium was really helpful - Top guy.
The pieces were bought from: https://www.chessmaze.co.uk/collections/chess-pieces/products/winchester-golden-rosewood-chess-pieces
They cost £99.95 (apparently on sale, down from £180).
Strangely, the exact same pieces were on sale at Official Staunton, who own ChessMaze (but for £162)
https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-pieces/products/the-winchester-golden-rosewood-chessmen
Either way, the pieces arrived the following day and they are gorgeous.
For £99 I'd love to see a more detailed set - They tick all the boxes I need.
So, in a nutshell, it was only when looking at other pieces and boards, that I could make a semi informed decision (and even then, I'm still woefully short on experience to make a properly informed decision).
My advice would be.... Buy a decent board (a nice inlaid/veneer one from Rechapados for £50-80).
But spend as much as you can on the pieces..... They really make a world of difference!
Thanks to everyone who commented previously - I'm sure it won't be the last time I dip my toe in the equipment water!
Here are a couple of comparisons, and the new set and board in action!
The shiny pieces are the new set (no idea what happened to the Knights being upside down!)
