- Checkers: The Complete Guide by Tom Wiswell and Millard Hopper : definitely unavailable

- Let's Play Checkers by Kenneth M. Grover

This seems to be exactly what I was looking for, a generalist book that's considered a classic. I'm not sure if it's beginner-friendly though, I’ve ordered it anyway and will let you know once I read it.

- Classic Checkers by Richard Fortman

I believe this is actually : Basic Checkers: The First Twenty Moves.
Apparently, it's a major classic, but still just an openings book. I've added it to my Amazon wishlist.

- Checkers: Opening Encyclopedia by Richard Pask
There are actually two books: "Complete Checkers: A Guide for the 21st Century" and "Complete Checkers: Repertoire".
I think you were referring to the second one. I read the Amazon sample for both, but it's just a dry list of moves, totally indigestible for me.

Thank you again! I'll come back here once I’ve read the book.

Straight checkers? Or Pool Checkers?
International checkers perhaps?

I love the play checkers. In my area of the southern United States straight checkers and pool checkers are the most popular. I enjoy playing both.

For straight checkers (English Draughts) look for books by Richard Pask. Especially “Checkers for the Novice” and the “Complete checkers repertoire”.

As for pool checkers, well it is very similar to Russian checkers (shashki), except for two minor differences. In pool checkers black goes first (same as straight checkers) and kings can’t bounce out of king row as kings, they have to stop there to be crowned.
So there is a lot of literature on Shaski (Russian Checkers) that will also be applicable to pool checkers.

In France, we play the international checkers variant. I had to check because I had no idea there were other variants, very interesting!

In French, it's called "jeu de dames", which literally means "game of ladies" !!

So "Let's Play Checkers" is not based on the international variant

No. I don't think it is. That book is on what we call straight checkers in the Southern US, especially Louisiana where I'm from. Same game as English Draughts in the U.K. Pool checkers is also very popular in my state a former French colony. Similar to the International Checkers played in France but on an 8x8 board, and only 12 pieces each side. International checkers "jeu de dames" is a great game but played on a 10 x 10 board with 20 pieces per side. BTW there is also Canadian checkers, (Canada is a former French colony), played on a 12 x 12 board.

There is also Jamaican checkers, Brazilian Checkers, and Turkish Checkers. Turkish checkers is a lot of fun, played with 16 pieces per side on a 8 x 8 chess board and the pieces move orthogonally rather than diagonally.

Look for books on international checkers ( American vocabulary) or international draughts (British vocabulary).

Abtectous
Isn’t checkers solved?

You didn’t read the topic! That’s for American checkers, where I am, we play the international variant. I’ve never found a good reference.

I didn’t know Americans play a different variant, so in fact, here was the worst place to ask.
