I have 3 sets...one is cheap glass, one i got for Christmas and is wooden travel set, but my favorite i bought on eBay after Christmas. It is called Imperator chess set, my set i learned on as a kid. The pieces are weighted plastic and about 3 1/8 tall. beautiful set and sentimental value also.
Does anyone collect chess sets?

I have a star wars chess set, but can never figure out who the king and queen is for each side and the instructions don't suggest it either....lol

yay or nay on glass/crystal ?
Like you I would be afraid to use a glass/crystal set. I much prefer weighted wood or plastic pieces. I have seen a few metal sets I have been interested in though. I also prefer traditional designs, namely Staunton. I have one Drueke set.
One concern I have is if a piece is dropped onto tthe board....some players pick them up high and take a moment deciding....I never do that, I keep the piece as near to the board as comfortably possible....if it was dropped it would most likely crack the board and or chip a piece....

I have a wooden set with wooden magnetic pieces, a set with a really flimsy type of board with glass pieces, however the sqaures are super 3D and I have a vinyl roll up set with triple weighted plastic pieces and extra queens.

I realized tonight that I don't like the proportion of my crystal/glass set. I also need to refelt the bottoms of some of the pieces.

I've got about a dozen sets; OK maybe 15. All right so I don't know how many I have, but I'm sure it's less than 20. 4 magnetic plastic sets, the small folder, the big folder, the Drueke, the 2 HOS plastic collectors, the 3" ebony, the older 3.5 HOS tournament ebonized, the 4.5 ebony, the 4" ebonized modern, the 4.4 HOS Sheffield in bud rosewood, the Baseball set I got off Ebay for $17.50 delivered which included a green and natural 2 1/4" wooden board. Do i have to include the crappy little "fits in your pocket" magnetic with disks instead of pieces? Oh and the analysis size plastic I was going to use at the library before I got the pair of 12" board magnetics-wait I counted those already. Ok 17. Whoops, make that 18; found another large folder under a stack of "must read" chess books.

I have about 25 sets, including several antique Jaques, and play with all of them. My current favorite is probably this 4" Jaques from the early 1930s:

I have a real fondness for chess sets. I have several wood, pegged travel sets starting from 3" going up to 8" plus several magnetic wood sets from 5" up. All of these are folding with the board inside. I just love them for travel and analysis. I also have probably 2 dozen full size sets too. I also love clocks. Why yes, I am an addict. Lol

I got a new set tonight, so I thought I would put it on and a few of my others.
I love that chess table! I have always wanted a nice chess table. Some day...

A buddy of mine has that same set. I don't like playing on it for two reasons: I often can't tell which pieces are white and which are black; and as you alluded to, the pieces are too big for the itty-bitty board.

Well... Go to :

And well again, you can go to :

Ah! I don't sell anything!

I was considering trying to die a set of pieces...

That set is beautiful. Love the bases, nice and wide. What is the weight?

Thanks. It's heavily weighted, but I don't know the exact weight. Feels similar to all my HOS 4" sets, so probably around 60 ounces.
This one is petty nice also. 3.5" Jaques from around 1862, unweighted:
