Does anyone collect chess sets?
As it happens, I collect stuff. I think I inherited a "collecting gene" from my parents, who both collected things. At varoius points in my life, I have accumulated fountain pens (200), manual and automatic watches (70), film cameras (about 60) and chess books (600+), clocks (14) and sets (about +/- 20 tournament size staunton and about 15 travel sets.) I am, as I get older, ambivalent about acquiring things, but I can't seem to resist. Perhaps it's a disease!
My guiding principle for collections is that what I collect must be usable. As an occasional tournament player, when it comes to chess sets, they must be Staunton. At last count I have six House of Staunton sets, a Legend set from the early ninties, a couple of 1930's-40's Jaques, several sizes of Lardys, a couple of recent aquisitions from Chessbazaar, a couple of Russian sets acquired in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and four or five others. The one non-staunton set that I have is a late 1800's St. George pattern set. What is occupying my table right now is one of the CB 4.4" Black Jack (Sinquefield style) sets:
I love that green board.
What size is it and where did you get it?
Well now I am officially jealous, especially since it is no longer available.
I bought a HOS 4" Collector in early 1999. I have since sold that and got a 4" Morphy Series from them in Blood Rosewood that would look great on that board.
Seriously that is really a nice setup you have there, my compliments.
My Best Chessmen Ever set is the Stage 2, Eastern, Natural (Walnut & Maple), Stainless Steel Bases.
I like this set a lot. It plays very well and it never fails to get a compliment at our chess club when I bring it for a rated game. And it usually is my opponent giving at least one of the compliments. This set plays and looks really nice.
My favorite set is my Noj Dubrovnik II in Walnut and 3.6". I just like the fine design details to the pieces, especially the knights. This set still gets compliments at club but not as many as the BCE set.
Well I bought the Dubrovnik set 3 years ago and paid just over $400.
I bought the BCE set 1 1/2 years ago.
I too save up the shekels over time for the big buys.
I am here to tell you that these sets are really, really nice and worth it.
By the way, the stainless steel bases really make the BCE set the nicest.
Alright, here are some pictures of my 3 favorite set.

Now my Best Chessmen Ever, Stage 2, Eastern, Natural, Stainless Steel bases, on a board I found on the internet when I searches wood, green, chess board:
And finally my HOS Players Series Rosewood set on a board I bought from The Rochester Chess Center. It's folding and note the letters of the notation are lower case:

Alright, here are some pictures of my 3 favorite set.

Nice pics and set. What's the board square size?
I put the endcaps on myself. I have done this with all my square cornered boards. It not only gives protection but looks nice as well. On the tournament boards as you see with my Players Series set I use a standard brass corner. I use antiqued ones with most of the other boards, including my Drueke boards.
I bought the Stage 2 because the I read that Izmet added that design because the collar was better for picking up the pieces during tournament play. I play with these sets and boards and liked the collar for grabbing.
I got the Eastern because I liked the opposite colored finials on the bishops. The finial on the King instead of the cross doesn't bother me and in fact I kind of like the way it looks too.
I got the stainless bases because it made sense when I read about them. Now that I have them, I really like what they add to the set for stability, balance and weight. People that I play with on it also like the bases as well as the complete set.
I never have had any kind of a hard time regarding this set. Frank Camaratta came out with his Zagreb 59' set in the late 90's and the opposite colored finials came to be accepted in tournament play in Central illinois over the years.
I also have been using the Dubrovnik II for 3 years now and the non-Christian design is accepted.
Mike, the squares on the board from Your Move Chess and Games are 52mm.
The square size on the tournament board from The Rochester Chess Center is 2.25". The Player Series needs that size.
The green board has 55mm squares.
Im looking to buy a chess set but where would i look for good quality? I want it to be reasonably affordable (£100+ isnt really what im looking for) and classic design, dark / light wood and standard pieces.
Where do i look? :(

sorry took me a while to respond. they are 2 inch squares. 16 in playing area and with the trim on the bottom measures 18.5 inches. i have decided to post it for sale if anyone is interested.
