Doubt about my new set

I don't want to start a new complaining thread so I won't name the seller, but it's a highly respected store here that I can tell.

I ordered Dubrovnik repro set and it came in yesterday. During analyzing a game I notice some weight differences among several pieces, even between the same pieces from the same wood. For black I chose purpleheart and white is boxwood.

The worse weight differences are the knights, I weighted them and this is the result:

White knight 1 (boxwood): 60g

White knight 2: 60g

Black knight 1 (purpleheart): 48g

Black knight 2: 42g

There are other pieces that are not exactly the same weight as their oppose color but the differences are not that much as the knights.

I'm not sure what to make out of this (about the knights), I'd like to hear you guys opinion especially those with lot of sets. Is this normal? Is it within acceptable range of weight differences? Would you accept it?

Even better if some of the retailer here can chime in (official staunton for example), they should know if this is okay or not.

Much appreciated for your thoughts.

I have not named the retailer of my Garbage Chavet set I received from France. Still trying to resolve it with the retailer in good faith. But my patience is wearing thin.

It's a really gorgeous set, nicely done with the finishing, grains and all.

The seller is good, it's not Noj but I'd say it's among the top for sure.

Well, if 10% range is normal then this is 33% weight difference we're talking about.

Name them, it's what they deserve after all. Hope you get it sorted and something extra for them 'extracting the urine'.

Yeah that's what I would normally do, named the retailer but I've seen quite a few threads the last couple of days where suddenly one post of  something got delayed, becoming a pool of complaining for all sort of issues other people are having. I'd like to avoid this.

33% are well beyond the margin, ask for replacements. This happened to me once only, with one piece (a black(as in: red) queen from a set by RCM. I told them the weight difference was too much, they replaced it without fuss.

Yeah that's what I'm gonna do, asking for replacement.

Much appreciated for the advice, especially mentioning 10% range difference is normal. I didn't know about this.

Those are really cool looking knights, Michael.

Visually it's a very handsome set. Do you easily feel the difference in hand. By that I mean let's say you move knight A in move one and then move knight B on move 2 would your mind have said hey something is wrong here? Or is it only when you're weighting pieces in both hands?

Avatar of TheOneCalledMichael

Yes exactly like you described. It was sicilian opening, 4. Nxd4 Nf6. After Nf6 I felt right away the flow of moving the pieces is different., when putting them down is also different I took the 4 knights and moved them consecutively to feel the moves and how they landed. I noticed then between the white knights there are no differences in feel, the black knights are definitely lighter and even between the black knights I felt a difference.

I don't remember I took them in both hands after that to feel the weights. I immediately took out a scale and weight them separately and it confirmed what I felt.

Oh yes, it's very handsome set to look at. More then that, it's a whole another level of experience when moving the pieces comparing to the first set I bought a few weeks ago. Although that set is also weighted and comparable in weight, the balance is different. It really is a pleasure playing with this set. Totally worth the money happy.png

For me this is a whole lot of money to spend on a set, I only wonder how it feels like to play with a Noj set. Would it take to another level of experience?

By the Knight design and wood choice you picked. I can tell who the vendor is. Don't worry I won't say who it is. It just shows that we shouldn't expect to get 100% quality from a retail vendor when we are having to shell out at times twice as much as a direct Indian seller.

Avatar of TheOneCalledMichael

It's not like I like to pay twice as much, remember I'm dutch lol. I have compared all the Dub's from different seller's, I looked for the design, choice of woods and their service reputation.

Noj checked all the boxes, but the price is out of my range. This seller is second best design wise, has interesting choice of woods and supposedly have a good service reputation. Let's see if they are indeed worth of the money now I have this issue.

Here could be an alternative if it checks some of your boxes. It's not Purpleheart but it's an option.

Yes I have considered that set, actually the bud rosewood version since I have already a set in sheesham / boxwood so I'd prefer another type of wood.

Avatar of KnightsForkCafe

Understand that. For me if I ever do decide to get it. It will be the Sheesham version. It's the same wood used in Bobby's set.

No, just a small decoration table to put small things on. Just wide enough to put a chess clock next to it.
