It looks like Bill Drueke is back making and selling chess boards again. They are considerably cheaper than I see in most places

As I read his Etsy page, it appears the sets are not weighted.

Exerpt from the description of the plastic sets:

" A solid plastic makes it the same weight as our original set but without the possibility of the weights coming loose or the bishop loosing its head. Each piece has green felt on the bottom. I pour liquid plastic into rubber molds. These are handmade and done with the utmost of care in my shop."

I already have an original set of the players choice pieces & a knock off set sold by ChessUSA.com (also known as, “ Your Move Chess & Games). I also have the 23” walnut/maple board, so I probably won’t actually be buying anything. I just happened to run across his page on Etsy & thought I would share his board prices. I love my board a know that the prices for Drueke boards is getting out of hand.

BTW;
Bill Drueke supposedly retired from making chess boards last September. That is another reason for posting this. I was unaware that he was back in/ still in business

Don't buy the new N○ 35 Drueke set. A friend of mine got one and it was horrible. It was so bad that he sent it back for a refund. Resin 3D printing might be a better way to make them if injection molding isn't an option.

Oh no! I have one on the way- maybe he improved his mix. I was thinking the moulds he has maybe be worn out if they are the original manufacturing moulds.

I bought a plastic Drueke set around 1991. That weighted set is very bottom heavy and stable. Does anyone know if the solid sets are as stable? My first thought was that the center of gravity may rise on the solid pieces. That would make the pieces less stable. Maybe only an insignificant amount, I don't know.

How do you think the Your Move set compares to the original?

Do you like one of them better?

Real/vintage Drueke on the right & knock off on the left

Knock offs have good weight and a slightly more “rubbery” feel. Probably not as brittle. I really like both sets. Every piece in the knock off set is slightly different from the original. Maybe some sort of copy right infringement, not sure .

Definitely a lot of difference. The queen top looks awfully bad.

I know that I am starting to sound like a sales rep for the knock off pieces, but I am not. I do apologize.

the knock off pieces sell for only $20 new. The originals are quite a bit more expensive. That is all I am really saying about these. They are close but not exact by any means.

Having bought a lot of stuff from Your Move, I bought the knock off set at $16 when on sale.  Over the last 3 or 4 years I ended up with this color and a Red and Ivory version as well, at the same price when on sale.

I don’t play with plastic sets much.  I gave away my original Drueke plastic back in 2004.  So I don’t have that set for a direct comparison.

I do like the knock off.  It plays and handles well.  I keep this set in a bag along with my Noj Dubrovnik II set as an everyday carry setup.  But last summer my Noj Dubrovnik Minceta came and I now carry that, alone, as an EDC set.  Perhaps I will put the Minceta with this knock off for EDC.

Anyway, for me as a player the knock off is great.

The knock off set is great especially the queen.

How different are the three levels of quality?  Isn't the basic set (OK) 20 bucks and the GOOD and BEST sets a lot more?

As far as the newer pieces Bill Drueke is making & selling, I would think your best bet is to ask Bill to show pictures of the actual pieces before you buy. I have never heard of somebody selling 3 different grades of quality. Sounds like something that I might personally avoid.
