ebonized chess set

As an online player without any local friends who play, can someone guide me about the ebonized pieces from House of Staunton.

Will the finish on these hold up over time, or does the "ebonized" finish wear off over some years.

Looking for my first quality set, so would like opinions from anyone who has experience with this.

I should note before I begin that I don't actually own an *ebonised* set (I own one of these in Boxwood & Rosewood).

That said, HOS sets are of very high quality (why else would people pay so much?) and I really doubt that the finish would rub off at all. Perhaps you might start to see a little wear after a lifetime of playing - and I mean a life time, like 70 years or so-, but by then I think it would add to the charm of the set anyway.

If this is going to be your first really good set, then let me give you some advice: spend some time making sure that you get the right board to go with the set you choose. Get the right size, and make sure the colours of the squares don't contrast too much or too little with the pieces or each other.

Feel free to ask any questions, and we'll help you make your decision as much as we can.

The ebonized finish wears off with use, especially on the sharper edges you habitually handle.

The fix is easy though. I use a black felt tip pen to carefully apply the ink, wipe (as it is glossy), reapply and wipe until you are happy.

You end up with a good matte touch-up.
