or this...
horizontally sliced neck or chest attached directly to short base...

I imagine what you had in mind was something like this - lowering the head down closer to the base, and extending the base up to meet it, so the thin stem is eliminated?
I like this design a lot.
This may be an interesting perspective for you, too:
(I got lucky to find this set, even with one rook and five pawns missing). I posted the whole set a couple of weeks ago as 'solar set'. It is an onion top set from ~1900, and the style has been subject to at least two earlier threads (linked in mine). These knights with 'shoulders' are one subvariant.
I agree with Rsava in #26. The stout design! This is not the delicate piece magically transcending walls. It conveys the heavy strength of a horse jumping over the shoulders of the surrounding fighters, friend or foe. ![]()
I'm gonna bump this up in case anyone else is interested. I just ordered the Prevision chess set from Amazon at 50% off (under $19 right now). I was already in the market for a 50mm square mousepad board, and I noticed that one version has the mousepad board, and even has a little wood grain graphics on it too (like my larger WE Games pad). Looks like a good deal...so I thought why not.
@Powderdigit Wow...that's more than 3 times what I'm paying for it. Don't blame ya. I've been looking at a fairly inexpensive Dubrovnik set from Slovenia that's rather appealing to me ...but I'm having a hard time getting over the 50% shipping cost and return policy. Oh well.
Wow, Mark, that is absolutely insane.
I looked at postage to Australia to see if I could purchase it and mail it, it is over $100 for me to ship it as well.
Yes the shipping costs outside America are terrible right now. Because this is a new product, Prevision have only sent their first batch to distribution centers in the USA. I hope that if the sets sell well they will start selling directly from Europe and Australia. I will post here when that happens.
I have so much to say but life is a tad busy now. Suffice to say, at this point, that it was a pleasure to buy Conor a drink earlier today. We played two games of chess and he destroyed me. However, I have a huge smile - it was so interesting, a privilege actually - to discuss the wonderful Ecliptic pieces with the man who designed them. Cheers Conor, I enjoyed meeting you and indeed, I will enjoy these pieces for a long time to come. I’ll post a more detailed review but for now - a few pics at the watering hole.

Perhaps the best thing is … Conor is a good guy, passionate about design and fun to be around. I look forward to more games with him and posting more detail on the pieces over the next week or so.
Magnificent set, love it! Missed this thread completely somehow 🙄
My "I like to make associations"-oriented mind immediately pointed me towards this very small (german? czech?) chess set from chess-museum

I was going to post this in 'Plastic (is) Fantastic' but why not here.

I have the mousepad board, but prefer to use a wooden board at home. I prefer a matte look over the glossy look, and it was fairly easy to dull the finish with a fine sanding sponge. I also gave some color to some of the pieces with colored putty.
This set handles fine. I may like the knight's head shaped slightly different to make it easier to pick up. Otherwise, the set plays well and I like the weight of the pieces.
Yenster1 - this looks fantastic. Very nice customization. I see you've added some red felt too, I'm thinking of re-felting my set with blue. I really like this matte finish though, I might try that too.
BrownishGerbil - wow, this just shows you there's nothing new in art. I hadn't seen these pawns before but it's the exact same collar idea I had. What a great set!

@conorokane Oh yeah I forgot to mention that red felt... I just happened to have that red self-sticking felt lying around, so I thought why not. I just stuck it over the existing felt and just cut around the bottom. It's working quite well.
@conorokane -
You are on the right track. However I was thinking of something along the lines of the 'standard' transition where the neck or upper chest area of the horse connects immediately/directly to a relatively short base. That is, not extending the base upward as much as in your photo immediately above (in which case it becomes something of a short, fat stem). So I suggest a stemless design similar to that used for most 'Staunton' design knights. That is, something like this...where the neck is sliced horizontally at the intersection with the base, as opposed to being sliced diagonally downward from the back of the neck to the front of the chest/breast, as in your photo above....
horizontally sliced neck attached directly to stemless, short base...
