English Chess Men set.. Any insight?

Hello all, I am new to this website.  I have been playing chess for years, but other than the game I am not to familiar with different kinds of sets etc.  I was in an antique shop this week and this set caught my eye so I bought it.  The tag stated English chess men c. 1910.  I did some research online and believe it is the French regence style of chess men.  The piece itself should be English due to the label.  The white pieces have what appears to be lead weights in the bottom (picture), yet the black pieces dont.  Any help would be appreciated as to the type of set, age, possible value if any?  Thanks in advance!

There were a lot of companies that made chessmen. If there isn't a mark on the inside of the lid or box, or chess pieces, good luck on finding out much more. Such as what company made them, because they could have been imported from another country, and an English label slapped on.

Cheer up though, because someone may have a set like that, and read this post. I wish I could help you more than that.  Check the House of Staunton, they have a lot of info on types, and styles of chess pieces. If no luck there, check other chess stores, and info on chess pieces on the internet. Good luck.

Looks like the Regency style to me as well. The Chess Museum has many old sets but, finding the maker is going to be difficult.

There are so many, I don't know which he was referring to, I tried chess museum old chessmen, and got quite a few. Just start checking them, and checking back here to see any updates. You can't necessarily go by the date at the antique store either. You might want to call them to find out where they got it from, and any other info they might be able to give you on your chessmen, if it is that important to you. You are going to have to do some research more than likely. Good luck.

It looks like a 20th century Regence set. These are pretty common and were made all over. Possibly it was made in England, possibly not; it doesn't seem too likely to me because I don't think the English market liked these sets very much; there are even English turning diagrams of them changed to be more English-looking, ie with Bishops that look like Bishop. The box does look like the original box but I haven't seen one with a label before. 1910 seems pretty optimistic. I would guess closer to 1940. The lead is not original; someone drilled holes and poured it in after the fact. It's not worth anything.
