I'm too poor to have a wooden chess set. So this one:

I like to play on my tournament set that i got from WWW.WHOLESALECHESS.COM with my green mouse pad chessboard (bought seperatly).and its the executive staunton set. Also i like to play on my Homemade wooden cabinet set that i made myself Cool .

p.s. maybe it's just me but i think www.wholesalechess.com has the best values on the web.

Hmm, I don't have a picture of it, but a while ago my dad got a collectors lord of the rings chess set. The white pieces are pewter plated with the black ones having gold plating.

It's really sweet because all of the white pieces (the good side) are different. Completely differnt. The pawns are lesser characters from the story with the power pieces being more important.

The black side (evil side obviously) is all different, except for double orcs in the pawns. I wish I could show you all lol, but it's amazing.

Nice!

I collect them I have a glass one, plastic $10 ones, small magnetic sets, wooden ones, 2 tube sets.

I have a small toolbox with plastic and wooden pieces if I ever need an extra piece I can find one lots in there I've found in parks and around tables where People played and lost them :)

Sniper:

I agree about whole sale they sell some great sets!

I have a House of Staunton set I use for tournament/friend play. I is a nice wooden Staunton but was only about $100. It is the 'Pro Line Series'. It is heavy weighted and very comfortable to play with.

I have one of these but I also use an inexpensive folding set I got at a toy store and is similar to this. I have a few other sets (magnetic, travel, etc.) but those are the two I mainly use. I like the inexpensive folding wood set because it is easy to throw in the car and not worry too much about.

Mike,

that's a real beauty of a set... such a pity you don't actually play with it, reminds me of Miss Haversham from Great Expectations (all dressed up and nowhere to go).

p.s. I suspect you might break out the good set if Faye Dunaway popped round for a game. Wink

I like warhammer 40k pieces made into a chess set  and really well painted and maybe some cool mossy dirt ground with a technological flare but this is only in my imagination maybe also anything with a nice weight to it

That's a great set. The Knight's mane is very dramatic, but not "too much" IMO ... I like every piece... the little stopper on the rook is a bit fey, but so what, the set as a whole is A++!  In fact... I may have a word with Santa Claus about that set ;)

I assumed the stopper was to use a rook as a backup queen when you promote a pawn. Am I wrong?

Actually I would have it out but no place safe to put it- although the wife and I generally are alone but we have 9 grandchildren ( and 1 on the way) and they pop in once in a while and I would commit some felony if they got hold of it Laughing

The nice thing about the rook is the 'little stopper' can be removed, which I have done- don't care much for it- otherwise I love this set. Cool

No there is an extra Queen for each color with the set, the 'stopper' is a design thing (?). You can have it on for Queen side and off for King side or vice versa- or off all together (My choice)

OK. I assumed it was to differentiate if you needed an extra queen. Rather than flipping a rook upside down or something.

I have several sets one made of marble , one stone set several wooden sets i guess i am a bit of a collector. I use a nice wooden set and a Drueke wooden board for Tourn. but i have to say my favorite set is a hand carved wooden set from Russia that my wife got for me about 10 years ago. She went to an awful lot of trouble to get it and NoBody plays chess on it. It is the prize of my collection.

I use a steak knife box that once belonged to my Grandma to hold my Chess Men it's scratched and it's many nicks in it but I keep it because it has sentimental value to me.

I got this set on eBay and it's my favorite.  It's called the Gothic by Ganine and it is from the 60s.  I think the pieces are kind of scary looking.  They will frighten my opponents.  The bishop, especially, looks like a real badass.

Hi guys,

My favorite chess set is a 15-16 inch traveling/folding wooden chess set that I have had for about 35-36 years.  It has a soft green and white surface.  The kings are about 2.5 - 3 inches tall.  Pieces are nicked, one white knight is from a different set (lost one, the replacement is a close/resonable match) the sides have a some scratches and some of the surface finish has flaked off (not much, just in a couple of places).  I must have played a 1000 games on it.  I don't remember where I got it or what it cost (it was inexpensive).  It has seen a lot of action.  I love it.

Watch your backrank.
