Favourite YouTube Chess Presenter - Andras Toth

Hello. I’ve been watching a lot of chess on YouTube recently. There’s a few presenters I’ve thought were very good for some time now, including Chessnetwork and chessbrah. But recently I’ve been watching a bloke called Andras Toth, almost exclusively. And instead of watching normal television. He’s changed the way I look at chess - and I’ve been playing since the late 1970s.

Please put forward your favourites. I suspect there are others out there who are really good but I’m not aware of. YouTube is a really great resource IMO.

Hi @IpswichMatt - I will respond more fully - I like Levy Rozman and numerous others but wanted to thank you for highlighting Andras Toth… excellent - I had never watched one of his videos. 👍As a relatively new player I like that many of these presenters make it fun to watch and somehow they let me know I’m a complete dill when it comes to chess (and probably many other facets of life) and yet, they make me laugh at myself. Good stuff. 👍

Let me know what you think please @Powerdigit, once you’ve watched some of these.
I’ve changed from playing the London to playing the Queens Gambit and from the French Defence to the Sicilian as a result of what Andras said, which was that these are much better openings to play to properly learn chess. This will mean losing some games but my goal is to get better and enjoy chess more, not to win more games and maintain a higher rating.
Yeah you’re right about Rozman - Gotham chess is also excellent and seems like a decent bloke.

Chess Coach Andras is good...

However, one of my favorites....

GM Daniel (aka 'Danya') Naroditsky is an excellent presenter and teacher.  In both respects one of the very best, IMO.  His presentation style is exceptionally logical, precise and lucid - far better than the average YouTube chess presenter.  He does an especially good job of explaining the why's, the reasoning, underlying the moves and strategy.  He also tends to present at a break-neck pace.  If that is a problem for you, the solution is to simply pause the video frequently as necessary, continuing only once you understand what has just been presented...

@IpswichMatt -

Picking up on your comment regarding your switch to the Queens' Gambit, which is certainly a reasonable decision as per your (and Andras') rationale, you might check out the following related forum thread.  (And of course, noting my comments therein!)....

Do I need a recent book on QGD Tartakower or Lasker as Black, or is Sadler good?

I'll give Andras Toth a look. Thanks for the heads up!

I enjoy Levy/GothamChess as well for the most part. But there are some times when he's a bit annoying with his non sequitur thoughts. But I guess that's part of his charm.

I'm not sure if it's too much caffeine or what, but he sometimes puts "entertainment" before instruction. Like when he's analyzing a game and a blunder is made, he'll go over the top and say, "Huh!?, What!? Wait, what just happened!? Huh!!" I mean, I get it, it's YouTube. He has so much content and has to be entertaining day after day after day for the Views. To be fair, for his straight-up instructional videos he does present in a more paced "educational" mode.

And of course, love him or hate him, there's also Hikaru's channel and Twitch stream. Hah!

I agree, he is very instructive. And in contrast to some very popular streamers he does not focus on shortcuts and entertainment, but actually teaches chess. My favourite channel is "Chess Dojo" though. Check it out.

I've seen chess dojo suggested to me by YouTube, I will have a look - thanks @Jenium

Yes he's very excitable, maybe you're being generous suggesting it's down to caffeine!

I saw one the other day when he was playing a game and commenting. He made a piece sacrifice and won very nicely a few moves later. Then after the game he checked it with the engine to see what the defence should have been, or whether his sac was sound. "Oh my God! It's +2.2! This is winning! IT'S WINNING!!!! THIS IS WINNING!!!"

It doesn't bother me, I find it funny and it's entertaining, he's very likeable.

Thanks Russ, I was already playing the QGD as Black and had chosen the Tartakower. I came across that thread when I looking for a repertoire book for Black on it.

Any excuse to buy more books happy
