Okay, I'm going to throw this out there because if anyone else does this, I'll still be excited about what it will look like.
Here's my idea. I decided one day at a restaurant, that standard salt and pepper shakers would make great pawns on a chess board. Then I started looking at other kitchen/restaurant/dinner table items that would reasonably qualify for back row chess pieces.
A tall pepper mill with a cross as a screw in the top would be ideal for a king. Knight is hard.
