FLEX PAD CHESS BOARDS (thin type)

Hey Shelby, when you mail out these Flexpads in the cardboard tube can you minimize the amount of stickers, labels and invoice pouch on the outside of the tube? I'm sure I'm not the only one who recycles the shipping tube and uses it as frugal roll-up board storage. Peeling the labels wrecks the surface of the cardboard tube. You'll be saving 6 trees. Thank you for your consideration.

Hi Shelby, I think this also looks good. I will add one thing if I may:
These look really good. I like the photos. While I appreciate that the industry as a whole has gone to flexible/rollable playmats there are times where I'd actually like/need some sort of hard surface. It would be nice if either:
a) some of these boards could be made available with a folding hard back - like the original linen board that's being replicated, or
b) perhaps you could make some sized blank folding boards that one could lay a flexpad on.
I think this could be useful in many situations where free tablespace with two opposing chairs is hard to come by. Hotel rooms, dorms, some outdoor areas, etc.

Hey all, been away for a day or so. Been playing around in the "lab' trying to figure out the best way to replicate the linen board.
Wanted to see what you all thought. Here is a sample printing of the corner of the board. Yes, I know the linen boards were NOT in red/black. They had no notation either. This is just to see what you thought of the print.
and
We are working on the black because the linen texture is not showing thru. It will show better with a lighter color like the green or the blue. Figure if we can get the black looking good, the other colors will be a piece of cake!
It will have a outline on it too to give the full representation of the linen. Taking things in steps before we refine the end product.

Wow... Just Wow!
OK, so the original linen boards weren't red/black and they didn't have notation
So what... I want one of THOSE boards
Very Nice!!!! My current Dreuke linen board spends more than 1/2 time with my wife using it as a lap desk. I'm looking forward to seeing these on your site and getting one [or two]. -Bill

Pawnerai,
So, what you are saying is you want me to send the tube with easily peel-able labels? I'm not sure but I am sure that will lead to a ton more of the packages getting lost...right?
And let's be honest here...peeling the labels does not destroy the tube, it destroys the appearance of the outside of the tube.
If anyone needs it, for a small fee, I can include storage tubes for the boards in with their orders. You will have to pay for shipping and the larger box too though.
Glad you are happy with the board! it looks great in the pics.

Yeah. Don't mind me. I was being cheap. LOL. I haven't even used the shipping tube for storage yet because my son and I use the Red&Black literally every day before school since we received it. It's his favorite out of all my boards. Thanks for making it happen!
I spoke with Shelby last night and saw the pictures.
He forgot to mention a couple things about the notation.
First, he is going to make the letters and numbers a smaller font size.
He also is going to make some of this board with no letters or numbers at all.
Hey, that last board looks like my linen board! 😏. Oh, it is. 😉

Hey everyone,
Stayed a little late last night and ran off a pre-production sample of the "Drueke Linen" style mousepad board with Green squares and a black border around it. We had a slight trouble with the black border going to the edge though. I had to go back in and clean it up for the pics with a black sharpie.
Opinions?
This is not my board order so accept my opinion with a grain of salt. The green does not look dark enough in comparison. I think the green needs a touch more "K" in the color formula. And the light squares need a touch more "Y". A pic of the Flexpad overlapping onto the original linen board would be helpful.

I like the pics, however the colors do seem a bit muted/faded compared to the original. Is that on purpose?
Well, I can answer this, sort of.
The linen board is mine and I can tell you the color of the light squares is really more yellow than pictured here.
When talking with Shelby we decided that too much yellow in a board would not be so good with a lot of sets with whiter, less yellow pieces. For example look at how nice the Ultimate plastic set looks on the pictured board. If the white squares had as much yellow as the original board, they wouldn’t look so good.
Shelby tells me the green of his board is pretty much an exact match to the green of the original.
I asked him to put some wood pieces on this board to see how they look.

The light squares look too white and the green squares seem too muted. In fact, the vinyl board reminds me of a tile floor in a warehouse.

@ShelbyLohrman I'll buy one of those @Pawnerai red/black mousepad boards if you can add this to your customized mousepad tournament chess board product on your site.
MCH818,
I will not have them on the site till I get production models in. If you want one now, get a hold of me at Shelby@woodexpressions.com or call me at 562-225-8324 and I will get you one.

Thanks! I'm debating how much I wanted it now. How long will it take to get the production models in?

The green in the actual board looks darker than the flex repro unless that is all camera. But the shade of green looks different by itself.

We are still refining the design. After it is done, we are looking at 5 weeks to get them in stock.
thanks
Shelby
Thanks! I think I will wait for the production models.

The designs are getting the changes today. By the end of the day, the linen will be more yellow and the notation will be smaller and less bold.

In the one picture on FB, the green did not looks as deep as the original and was lighter. Maybe it was the camera? It looked like a standard green they used to use a lot on vinyl boards in the days. Are these also made in the USA? Thx Mike

I didn't used to worry about how my pieces looked... then these forums ruined that for me, as has been stated in other posts here. Now I'm that way with these boards! I bought the Purple/Black Bobby Fischer board off of Amazon before I learned all about this here, and it was the best thing ever. Then, I succumbed to peer pressure and bought the butter yellow ultimate pieces. The yellow and black on the Purple looks awesome. Now that one is the best ever.
...until this thread. So I ordered a wood grain board recently, and put my wooden pieces on it. That is the best one... well, you get it. So now I feel the burning need to upgrade to the red and black board. I even ordered some Wood Expressions checkers to hold me over for the 5 week production lead time.
Thank you for all of this work, Shelby! This is fun to watch.
I'm nobody but I think that linen looks excellent in the photos and I actually think it looks really cool "showing through" the red and black squares, too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
