Finally arrived?  I was posting in this thread long before you were even a member here.  Check out the first page, posts #6, #7, and then on page 2, posts #21, and #28, among others.

Dude, chill. It was a joke.

Dude, chill yourself.  I was joking with you.

ive been tying to avoid responding unless i was directly spoken to,so you could all get back to your thread. with that said, just want to mention what i feel is the obvious... you make sarcastic snarky remarks to people and take offense to them when they retaliate then tell them to chill out.  not trying to ignite any debate here, just pointing that out. youre not the only one either.my question would be,rather than attacking the guy for answering a question, why not go after the sacarstic question that drew it out of him? it IS obvious that downloading an engine isnt against the rules. the question was only asked to continue the debate i started(and am trying to end). nowhere has it been mentioned that engines couldnt be downloaded...

The difference mate is that I'm making these remarks as jokes.
I never offend anyone intentionally.
Some of the guys here start all condescendingly, saying 'you don't know what you be talkin' 'bout stupid boy' and stuff like that.
I think the difference between me and them are obvious.
You guys really need to loosen up.
Too much stress going on in these threads nowadays.

You've never offended me at all. Why am I being excluded??

The last time I had an engine was in high school, Chessmaster 4000 then Rebel (free). It has been a long time since I played in a tournament. When I become active again, I will download Stockfish or any free engine.

After playing a move recommended on Hiarcs for my iPad ( against it from a position in a classic game) while laying in bed this morning, I checked the game with Stockfish. The hatchery spawn called HIARCS a patzer.

I played Chessmaster 2000 on my uncle's computer in the 1980's. I'm pretty sure it's free now.

I bought Chessmaster 2100 in 1989 with my first computer. It won't run on today's machines.

It'll run inside Dosbox.

Okay. Is that worth doing?

Chessmaster 9000 might be worth spending time on software that runs antiques. It was the best of the series.

Old chess programs are great as opponents if you don't have anyone to play with, because you might actually be able to beat them occasionally. Every now and then I play against Zargon II under C64 emulation and it's great fun.

The old 8 bit chess programs couldn't rely on raw computing power because the CPU and RAM was so restricted, so they actually had to try and program some chess talent. This makes them (sometimes) seem more human as opponents.

It's worth doing if there are old DOS games or other programs that you wish you could still use. Otherwise, maybe not. (Hint - If you decide to try out Dosbox, use the D-Fend Reloaded front end GUI - It's MUCH easier to use:  http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/ )

The first few program installs might take you a while, while you learn the ins-and-outs of Dosbox/D-Fend Reloaded. After that, you can typically install a program in a few minutes.

I don't think you'd want to try installing Chessmaster 9000 in Dosbox, as CM9000 is Windows. (I think if you want to install a Windows program into Dosbox, you would also have to install a copy of the Windows OS into Dosbox.) I have CM9000 installed directly on my Win 7 machine, although I had to jump through some hoops to get all of the patches AND the "No CD crack" installed. If you don't mind leaving the CD in the drive (if your PC still has a CD/DVD drive), it should be simple to install the program and all patches.

I have Chessmaster X installed on my W7 notebook, although I never use it.

Since investing in ChessBase products in 2001, I've had very little use for ChessMaster. I bought CM X when I found it for $20 at BestBuy. That was more than ten years ago.

Hey, I paid good money for Commander Keen; I want to still be able to play it! Cool

Nobody updated this thread for a while, so I decided to do it. There are many free chess engines out there, and I do believe any engine with a rating above 3000 will be more than enough for an average chess player. However, here are several chess engines worth noting.

  • Stockfish 7 - Rating 3338
  • Komodo 8 - Rating 3296
  • Houdini 1.5 - Rating 3196

Top chess engines are consistently being updated. If you want a more updated list, visit this article

I like SCID for my computer, but stockfish also has a nice mobile version that I use for my phone.
