I went to Target today for errands and noticed Fritz Grandmaster 11 for 10 dollars, I was thinking about buying Fritz for game analysis and whatever other features I could figure out, so I basically impulse bought this since it was just $10 even though I didn't research it.

I'm guessing it obviously isn't as strong an engine as the more expensive Fritz on the chessbase website, but I'm wondering if for a beginner player like me this will be good enough for awhile or is it lacking alot of useful features or strength?  Doesn't seem to be alot of information about it online.

YES I have Fritz 12 which retails for about $50.00 and if I knew what I did now I would've stuck with Fritz 10. Any stronger engines are irrelevant to players in your class (or mine) but you can add the following FREE engines: Stockfish, Houdini & Firebird; Houdini is a stronger engine than Fritz's.

You got a great deal!

Cool so I should be able to set it up to analyze my games and go through opening theory?  After all the talk about Fritz its surprising it's so cheap.

I'm a full time chess teacher and have a large number of software programs on three different computers and use them all with my students. The Chessbase line of products (Fritz, Chessbase and now Rybka) are all great. However, you don't need to spend the money for the latest editions. The bottom line is game analysis.

One of the tools that will help you with your game is studying database games. Take any game in the stock database and, starting with the opneing move, identify opening prinicples and tactics throughout the game. I teach my students by having them analyze Grandmaster games. Fritz is great because you play against the computer and set the AI to play a little higher than your level. This will help develop your game.

I love when new editions come out because you can then get the previous edition at a greatly reduced price. Often, the previous versions are better than the updated one. I'm pretty good with manipulating the Fritz and Chessbase line of products, so let me know if you have any questions.
