Fritz17 erratic when connecting to DGT BT/USB eboard

Hi, Fritz17 works just fine with me just playing on the screen (although I have not figured out yet how to activate the welcome screen's right side where the apps reside [I can use the apps when I log in directly to ChessBase.com], but that's another story.  I have a Lenovo Yoga 2-in-1 running Win10.  When I connect Fritz17 to the DGT BT/USB eboard using the Rabbit plug in, I get very erratic behavior - in a casual game Fritz recognizes moves on the eboard for 1 or 2 moves, then it starts to move as though playing against itself.  This is with either USB or BlueTooth connection.  Any suggestions?  By the way the eBoard works fine with other apps and also sites.  DGT tells me there is no official support of connecting to Fritz17 but I see plenty of users are able to do so.  Thanks!  kerpa  (named after PAul KEres) Michael Miller

why did you get fritz? its a copy of stockfish chessbase made with "tweaks"

stockfish is open source so yeah

fritz is less powerful than free stockfish

duntcare

use a stockfish to connect

@duntcare, even if I agree with you about the relative merits of Fritz vs Stockfish, given that the OP is using Fritz, a recommendation to just use Stockfish instead is not particularly helpful. Or indeed, at all helpful.
For the OP, I don't use Fritz myself so can't really contribute usefully either I'm afraid.

Thanks.  I am aware of the Intellectual Property issues with Fat Fritz 2.  Bracketing that (YMMV), I would appreciate any technical thoughts.

@duntcare if you've answered a question it isn't the one the OP asked. He is using Fritz17. This is a GUI, a well respected one at that. It's not an engine. It's not FatFritz, although that does come with it. To connect to an electronic board you need to use a GUI that processes the commands to send and receive the moves using the serial port or USB or BT. Stockfish is good, but it won't do that. Besides that, I agree with @harthacnut that your reply, even if it had been factually relevant, was at least insensitive.

@kerpa Some versions of the Rabbit plugin create a log file in your C:\users\<yourname> directory called DGTBOARD.log.txt. I don't have a DGT board so don't know if it shows moves etc but it might help. I've written my own versions of the plugin for Certabo, Millennium and Novag boards and there is nothing in there that I can think of that would start creating moves itself. I think it's more likely to be a Chessbase problem.

Thanks Graham I will definitely look at the log. When you say it’s a ChessBase problem are you referring to the company or to CB 15? I didn’t think Fritz 17 uses part of the installed CB15 but it wouldn’t surprise me if there was some conflict between, say, a dll file used by both programs. Also I still have Fritz14 installed. I’m thinking of uninstalling it.

@kerpa sorry, I should have been clearer - I meant Chessbase the company. I suppose a faulty cable or connection could make it look like the DGT was trying to send moves, but in that case the moves would probably be garbage (unless you've hit upon the chess equivalent of an infinite number of monkeys typing Shakespeare!) But that still wouldn't explain why the board still works fine with other apps. It's probably worth sending them an email because, as you said, lots of other people use DGT with Fritz so they might have seen this before.

FYI I may have inadvertently discovered that at least on my laptop Fritz 17 has a conflict with dual monitors. When I disconnected my large 2nd monitor (which serves as a great display of software connected to the DGT board, but I can do ok without it) the erratic behavior went away - only to reappear when I plugged the monitor back in. I’m going to see if I can replicate this tonight. If so, dual monitor incompatibility is a bug that I’ll report to ChessBase. I hope they can fix it at some point, but I don’t absolutely need to use the second monitor while using Fritz and the DGT eboard.

OK, it's definitely a dual monitor but in Fritz 17.  I reproduced the problem by plugging in the second monitor and solved it when removing it.  Having said that, I still find Fritz 17 rather clunky in its UI (User Interface).  I just downloaded Lucas Chess and wow!  a much better program for learning.  I'm still trying to figure out how to configure it (gonna post a question about setting up move announcements), and I'll still use Fritz 17 from time to time.  But I recommend anyone thinking of buying Fritz 17 look at the free alternative.

Hi - I'm seeing the same issues with Fritz18 and my DGT smartboard.  It works fine for a number of moves, then Fritz starts making moves for both sides.  I'm running this on a windows laptop with no dual monitor.  Not sure how to troubleshoot this
