I'm a casual player, and I don't want an entire library full of books dedicated to each part of the game. Can you recommend a good all-around book for the decent casual player? A book that covers "everything" for when I need to refresh my memory on something or whatever, but doesn't need to go too in depth. I don't need a book that explains the rules or how the pieces move or anything, but I also don't need a book that goes over openings into move 20.
Thanks!
Silman's Complete Book of Chess Strategy sounds like it was made for you. It's not a book to study (It's my least favorite of Silman's Books) -- but it's a good book to give you some ideas about things you'd want to study... and it's a good reference if you wonder things like: "What's the Caro-Kan opening, again?" --
I went ahead and bought Silman's Complete Book of Chess Strategy, thanks. It looks like just what I'm looking for. Amazon's one click ordering makes it too easy, ha ha.

It doesn't really matter... the stages of chess development are:
1. Chess? That's some boring game right? Whatever, it's nice outside...
2. Chess is ok to play every now and then. I like it.
3. I wonder if I could get better at chess by looking at a book or two?
4. Need more chess books. More. No time to read them though... too busy buying chess books. Chess books.
5. Isn't there anything chess in this store? I need more chess stuff, "sir this is a grocery store" -- I don't give a damn -- where's the chess stuff? " uh we have chess cookies?" Great. I'll take a case.
6. My wife has left me. My children hate me. My dog is hungry and craps on the carpet because I don't leave the house. My rating is up 13 points this week and my algebraic edition of Pawn Structure Chess just arrived. Woo-Hoo!
You stage 3'rs... you've got it easy.
Oh, and one-click amazon...that's some diabolical stuff right there.
