Good chess set

Hi,

Anyone who can recommend a nice weighted chess set (in wood)?

PHIL-ROY

I bought a beautiful board on the chess store, the board and pieces are made by hand. It cost 300$ but it was worth it. Took me a while before playing blitz on it. What ever price your looking for or board, you'll find it on thechessstore.com

PHIL-ROY

Weighted as like those the pros play? DGT i believe they're called. I think they are over a thousands.

Depends on your budget. Here is a cheap and nice looking set: https://www.amazon.com/3-75-King-Height-Collector-Staunton/dp/B073P5SFLD/ref=sr_1_11?crid=3SN7JUYX83S7G&keywords=weighted+wooden+chess+set&qid=1580954622&sprefix=weighted+wooden+chess+%2Caps%2C181&sr=8-11

I would say CAD 300 all included, of course if I fall madly in love with a set I might pay more happy.png

Thank you – I'll look into that, did you try it? happy.png

Thanks! Do you have any personal favorites from those sites? happy.png

I don't have the exact set. But mine is very similar to it.

Buy one of these boards and spend the rest on pieces. 😎

Wow, those boards are amazing, I think I can spend hours on that site...
I was thinking of getting one of those electronic boards, but found them too expensive for what they really offer -- these are just beautiful

@Knightsforkcafe has one of those clearance boards and recommended them to me. I haven't got one yet but I want one for sure.

My first recommendation is to make sure you compares prices online before buying. I was in the same boat as you about a month ago. For the first time, I decided I buy a nice set of wooden chess pieces and board and my budget wasn't drastically high though I was ready to pay the price for a set if I really wanted. I started looking around searching for the best possible set I could buy for the money. The first thing I noticed is that prices can hugely vary based on the vendor that is, you may end up pay several times more for the more or less the same set in an online shop that you can possibly find elsewhere for much less expensive. Here is what I ended upwith I have bought two set of chess pieces from Royal Chess Mall: their Hadrian chess pieces in bud rosewood and boxwood (for C$280) and their Executive Staunton Chess pieces that sells for only C$107 shipped from India (import fees included). Of course the Hadrian pieces are spectacular but the Executive Staunton Chess pieces is also amazing in regards to aesthetics and quality of pieces. Surprisingly to me, my roommate prefers it over the Hadrian set. Here are the links:

https://www.royalchessmall.com/product/4-3-hadrian-luxury-staunton-chess-pieces-only-set-triple-weighted-budrose-wood/

They use a fast shipping service and I received my orders in about 7-10 days from the day I placed them (I placed three orders with them). When I received the pieces I was not only amazed by the quality of the pieces but also I realized the pictures don't do justice to these pieces. Seeing and feeling them in person is just another experience.

I have seen the same pieces be sold in some other stores for several times more. I don't want to name these stores here but you can see this yourself if you spend some time looking around and comparing prices (other vendors may name the same product differently, by the way).

Finally, I suggest you first choose your pieces and then buy a board for them. This is because you would want to make sure the board is compatible with the pieces regarding the size of the squares but also in regards to color an tonality of the board in relation to the pieces.

By the way, you also need to decide what color you want for the dark pieces. White pieces almost always come in boxwood. Dark pieces can be in black (ebony), brown (golden rosewood, Indian rosewood, acacia) and red (bud rosewood). I have bought my Hadrian set in bud rosewood. I was worried I may not like the red pieces but this red wood is very pleasing in tone: it is a rich and deep red that doesn't hide the wood grain. I quite like it though my roommate prefers the brown acacia of the Executive Staunton pieces.

Thank you my friend, very helpful -- I will look the links through

Very true -- Ideally I would be able to go to a store, so I could see them "in action" but I live in the middle of nowhere and there are no decent stores for chess sets around here.

I like both the sets you linked, it's true -- I'm not sure if I'd like the red of the Hadrian set, but they are really beautiful -- I wonder if they have recommended boards for the different sets, I could always ask.

Again, thank you very much

it may be over your budget, but it’s really cool!
