Google Nexus 7 and PDF

I'm tired of having tons of chess books on paper, and I noticed now there is the chance to read them in PDF format.

So I was thinking to buy a nexus 7, which would give me the chance to read the books in pdf format, and of course use some android apps for chess.

Did anyone saw some chess books pdf on a nexus 7? Are they readable or the screen is too small?

I read PDFs nice and fine with a Kindle Fire (about the same size) .. you want to get the right PDF app. that will be fast + do a good job in terms of dealing with the smaller size. EZPDF, Repligo etc. are good options.

Most of the time, I tend to be able to read landscape-wise with the default view settings though for some smaller text or densely packed PDF pages, I'd touch-zoom them and move around with my fingers.

All in all, I've been reading chess books on PDF for about a year so far and it really works out well (I usually end up creating a board on my smartphone chess app. and using the pdf viewer app. on the tablet simultaneously)

Thanks, I was able now to see a PDF on Ipad, and is really great, let's hope the 7 " is enough for my poor eyes.

Chess Book Study is an app that allows you to read a pdf chess book and follow along any games with a chessboard as you go, and you can analyze any position with a computer as well. Works great, makes reading chess books much easier (don't have to set up a board or try to mentally keep track of the game inbetween diagrams).

By the way, I have read quite contrasting reviews on the Nexus 7, what is your opinion?

I think it's amazing. For the price it's unbeatable. I'll put it this way: If you're into HD movies, music, games, books, comics, or apps, you could not possibly spend only $200 and get anything that's even competitive with the Nexus 7.

edit: Maybe you could argue the new Kindle fire could compete, but I think the Nexus is better because it's a legitimate OS, while the Fire is really just a portal to Amazon.com content really.

Honestly I just wanted to use it for chess. There is also SCID on Nexus, which means I can comment and store my games right away. Or I can have a million of games at my fingers if I need to look for something particular. And from what I gathered as Apps info, it seems it can use all the engines like Houdini and others.

I didn't consider Amazon, because the problem is that they allow only their Apps to be installed, and they also can ban you, plus the CPUs shouldn't be so strong, and for the engines it is important.

I was considering the 32 GB, since the price seems good, 250 dollars.

It's funny you say that ... as I wholeheartedly agree even though I don't even own a Nexus.  I recently loaded the latest Jelly bean stock ROM that comes with the Nexus on my old Kindle Fire and it works like a charm ! I certainly don't miss the Amazon buyware-layer on top of the older Android OS.

It came to my mind another question: if a person has an Ipad and an Iphone, and install Shredder on the Ipad, automatically will install Shredder also on the Iphone. Does it happen also with the Nexus if someone has an android phone?

The convenience is obviously to pay only one time for an app.

I don't know if it's 'automatic' but the purchase will be in your 'apps' when you go to google playstore. So you only have to purchase once and you can install to multiple android devices.
