I've mentioned it in other forums, but the "Idiot's guide to chess" by patrick wolff, in my opinion is a fantastic book for those under approximately 1300 for many reasons.  (and there are aspects of the book that probably are appropriate for those up to about 1500).  it is not just a beginner's book. he builds up from easy to more complex.  his writing style is very enjoyable and easy to grasp.  he explained things in a way I just didn't understand clearly before.  the book is clearly organized.  I noticed no errors.  this book in my opinion is very useful for the person who has never played a game of chess before, to most people up to 1300.  you can get it real cheap at amazon.com, by the way.  that way if it doesn't work out, you didn't lose much.

-_-. . . .

I don't use books, I learn from losing.

If I start reading that book, there might be lots of things I don't understand or even know of, but, I think we can learn more by playing actual games! Because, most tactic are form in mid game where players observe the whole board then realize that there is something to done with that position.

This way, we save money and learn! LOLZ

Freezenyr (Bob), Thanks for the tip on the book.  I ordered it.  Need to read a little to improve my game!

EndingPride, I've learned a few things from losing too!, that I don't like losing!  I think when your in a game you will not remember a lot of moves from previous games (except maybe a few of your favorite ones).  When you read you can study better, when you are playing you are focused on the game.

I agree with Ending Pride that losing is a great way to learn.  I enjoy reading about the game too...sometimes I pick up a tidbit here and there that I use often in games.  to really save money on books, check them out of the library.  then if you really like the book, you can buy it.

also a good book

i don't like losing either but repeated getting whupped by certain moves in grains it in my memory alot better than a book. though I will buy the book, it will only add to depth of sight and give ideas...

i think it really all depends on your learning style and i think everyone should learn multiple ways
