Help identifying these pieces

Hello,

My partner was gifted some chess pieces from a family member recently. I can’t work out what they are made of, but would like to buy a suitable chess board for him. I don’t seem to be able to upload a photo though. Can anyone tell me how to do this please?! Thank you!

It may take a week or so before an account is allowed to upload photos.

You can always upload it to an image sharing site like this one and then copy and paste the link:

If it is possible for you to post pictures, then you'll be able to see and click this icon

No problem.

Those are the Isle of Lewis chess pieces. You can see the originals at the British Museum, where they display them on a board of white and red squares.  The photo here doesn't show how big the pieces are, but you'll want a board with squares large enough that the pieces aren't crowding each other.

That is brilliant, thank you so much. The king measures 5cm wide at the base, so quite big. Will look for a board now!

Good luck! They look like a good representation of the originals.

Best replicas are made of a mix of crushed stone and resin. Some are only made of resin.

You can go on the British Museum website or youtube channel to get more informations.
