My father passed away and I am wondering if anyone has seen or knows about a chess set like this?

Well if he kept it a while then it must be really worth something.....

Plus if you can find so rich person they will pay thousands for something as the value is in the pocket of the buyer. Get it! No good if a poor person says it worth something if they can not afford to buy it.

There are people out there that collect these types of chess sets. I would try Ebay.

Did you delete the other thread? This is not a well-known set. I'd never seen one until yesterday. It also doesn't look like the pieces match so I guessed it might be a one-off custom or hobby set possibly out of some chess piece molds and some molds that were not intended to be chess pieces or even a set made entirely out of non-chess figurines. I guess you might try eBay but put a reserve on it if it's worth something to you. It'd be rare for a set like this to go for very much there. I only know of one or two collectors who might be interested. You might bug Floyd or someone with CCI, see if the'll sell you an add in the magazine: http://chesscollectormagazine.sharepoint.com/Pages/default.aspx if you want to sell. I'd consider keeping it if it means something to you, though, unless you do get it appraised and it turns out to be worth something.

I didn't delete it. Maybe a moderator did? I'm appraising it because we had to help pay for the cost of the funeral and burial and it would help to get some money out of it. I wouldn't appreciate it as much as someone else would-I know that. It sat in my dad's house and he had things stacked on it. It was never played with really. I did keep things of little value that my dad adored. I agree it would be hard to sell on ebay as it is heavy and all the ceramic pieces would have to be carefully shipped. I just wondered if there were something to compare it to.

But the imagae of it on your profille page!

And with it ask How and Where to get this set appraised? Plus advice on how to ship it if sold?

WGM  Natalia_Pogonina (<--link) is very friendly sure she could point you in the right direction. Plus it is getting near the holidays so you have plenty of time  to find the value at decide on your next step with the future of that set.

Also find a site whre they have ceramic items for sell that should have give you a clue. Question if you know where the set was made that helps also determine the value along with the year(maybe).

So ur not considering keeping it as a family treasure?

One day in the future you could show it to ur grandchildren and tell them, this is chess set that your great-granddad used to play with.

I would keep it but my papa never played with it. It sat dusty and he stacked things on it. It had just been sitting for years. Thanks for the input though. Trying to make some money to offset funeral expenses.

morality clearly isn't the question here. it's money to bury the father of the post maker in the ground, is clearly what we are discussing here.

but if you ask me, i think the answer is as clear as night or day. but it doesn't matter, because the father will be below the ground.

edit: just like the chessboard was

If she wants to sell it, it's her chess set. I didn't keep every single thing that my grandmother had when she died.

It's tough to appraise it because it's pretty unusual, and the market for luxury chess stuff isn't very big. I would put it out on the internet somehow, but don't commit to selling it right away unless you have to. Wait for someone who likes it and has a lot of money to come along.

nah, I wasn't really talking about morality (I rarely do). I mean there's a difference between morality and loving somebody - you don't love your family members because you think it's the moral thing to do, you love them because they are your family members. Anyway, I digress...

Nice chess set, btw. If you knew approximately when it was made that would definitely help a lot with the apprasial.

Nvm, how did I not notice the 1872 in the first pic?! Do u think that it's accurate?

tedthepirate

sorry for being a bit passionate about a chessboard and being witty about your loss. it was a little much.

It's ironic because he had a lot of things that sat dusty. He kept things for years just because. I kept a hat he wore. I kept his coat he wore every winter. I kept a button he had pinned up on the kitchen. I kept his watch which has little value. Those things were a part of him. August 24 was a tough day but so is cancer. I will not wash his coat. Or get a new watch. I like his just fine. I wasn't prepared to pay 6600.00 to bury him is all. I am 1600 shy of paying of mortuary so I am selling things that other people may love but my dad just had sitting around with books and albums and dust stacked on top.

Gretchenisanangel

I would trade anything, anything at all to have him back.
