Chavet pieces were made from Jura fruitwood, their characteristic is swirly grains and for their black pieces they're always have been either black or walnut stained. Is this stained the pieces you're showing? It looks like it's not? I like it though even if it's not Chavet happy.png

It looks like a reproduction from Chessbazaar? You can try to measure the pieces to see if matches with the specs from CB website.

On CB they're showing v2, there is slightly difference with the manes and snoot of the knight, maybe yours is v1? As far as I know they're the only one that offers repro in sheesham.

I have 2 chavet's from early 70's and they have the same patina as yours. As for real Chavet I don't know, afaik Chavet never made pieces from rosewood. Maybe others can chime in who collect waaay longer then me.

Cheers mister! Actually the walnut stained pieces were so worn you could hardly distinguish between black and white pieces. I had to restain the black pieces. The black pieces have 4 coats of walnut dye now.

Your knight is definitely Indian. Did you check the underside of the white pieces?

M73gy posted a picture of some black pieces, see just above, I mean the pic that shows the whole black set,,,,  a couple of those pieces are very similar to my French Lardy set , circa roughly 1981. My set has the angular knights(two piece ) and the king and queen are very fat /chunky (beautiful and practical ). My set may have come from Jenners in Edinburgh in around 1985. My set is not high quality, not weighted or felted,  but the only similar set I ever saw was owned by the 1978 US Open champion. (His set may not have been identified to mine, but at the time, I thought was a similar manufacturer

Nobody said rosewood is not used in Europe, in fact I have a 1980 lardy in golden rosewood. I only said Chavet never made black pieces in rosewood happy.png

Ah okay, now I see your point happy.png Sheesham grows primary in India so I guess that's what he meant only Indians use sheesham. Nowadays the mainstream Staunton pieces you find here in Europe, are mostly made in India so you'll find those sheesham pieces here in the local stores as well. The high end pieces made in India (mostly in Amritsar to be precisely) are made in more exotic woods like ebony, padauk, indian rosewood, tazmanian blackwood etc.

Fwiw, I like your set happy.png

Nice set. I especially like the Knights. While one person might call the carving sloppy and crude. Another person might call them unique and full of personality. The chess set was made by a craftsman in the Eastern Hemisphere of the Earth. thumbup.png

@M7G3y Sheesham chess set = Made in India.  The Indians were flooding the market with copies of French sets. It's why Lardy closed up shop. The glass eye set you posted looks like a different rosewood and not sheesham.

I don't mean to take away anything from your set. Your set is nice for play or display.
