Help to ID and any info on antique set

Hi all, fairly new to chess.com and just came across this forum. Would appreciate any help identifying or any info on this set which belonged to my grandfather who was from Cuba. Sentimental value obviously, and also I always really liked the knights specifically. The box is approx 7x6x2in, though I do not know if it’s the original box the set came in. King and queen are approx 3in tall, pawns 1.5in. We also never had a board, and would play on a red and black cardboard checkerboard. Haven’t yet been able to find a nice wood board that matches the approximate style, color, and scale of the pieces — any thoughts on where I might find? Any info appreciated…thanks for your time!

Hi, this is a French "Régence" (Regency) style set.

Does the box look like it came from the Far East? The pieces look European the dark side might be Rosewood.
Very 👍

The width of the royals? This would help you find a board. Maybe a 1.5 inch sq would work Drueke boards come in that size.

Thanks for responses! Reading about Régence pieces and based on family history I think it’s possible the pieces may have come from Spain originally in the late 1800s. I think my grandfather said they were originally his own grandfather’s, who came from the northwest of Spain in that time period. I have wondered if the box looks like it may be from Asia as well, and others have had the same impression though I don’t know for sure. No direct concrete connection to Asia that I know of. There is a Chinese community in Cuba that was growing during that time period which may relate.

I’ll check the width for sure later but they are approx 3/4” in width.

Neat family story; you could print out a couple boards in different sizes on a color printer or black white.
