Greetings All,

I ran across a nice Horn set on a popular auction site but the box (and especially the label) is a little worse for wear.  I'm hoping someone here can help identify this set.

Here are the (rough) measurements:

Height Base
King 3.06”/77.8mm 1.2”/30.5mm
Queen 2.51”/63.7mm 1.09”/27.8mm
Bishop 2.28”/57.8mm 1.09”/27.8mm
Knight 1.91”/48.6mm 1.09”/27.8mm
Rook 1.73“/44mm 1.08“/27.5mm
Pawn 1.51”/38.4mm .85”/21.7mm

And some photos:

Thanks very much for any insight!

I don't know the model number off the top of my head but I can tell you that the label dates from between 1924, when W. C. Horn & Co. incorporated, and 1941, which is after Horn merged with McCrillis. I can also tell you that it doesn't appear to be within Horn's A or C lines.

Thank you very much, Chuck!  You are a veritable fount of encyclopedic information!

@GrandPatzerDave, what you have is a Horn “D” series, D-3 to be precise. I’ve seen D-2’s 3’s and 4’s occasionally. They were made for Horn by Sterling Furniture in Grand Rapids between 1926 and 1934, when Sterling went out of business. Horn discontinued the series then, rather than try to find someone else to produce it.

Excellent additional information!  It's a neat little set but unfortunately is missing a black knight.  I'm hoping to find a local carver to replicate the remaining one, just for completeness.

It’s a nice set; I read that Sterling also produced sets for Drueke.

Thanks!  I believe it was a lucky catch!

Hey @GrandPatzerDave - looks like a great find.👍 On the knight … someone like @jacmater might be able to take on that task - that said, you’ve probably got a local contact. Just an idea.

Thanks!  I'm sure he could but between shipping cost and angst of things getting lost in shipping I'm not sure my fingernails could take it!  wink.png

Ha! Totally understandable, probably a silly idea in retrospect.🤦‍♂️
