I ordered & received 2 plastic sets from House of Staunton, and I am very satisfied with them.

1. Hastings set

▲ Hastings knight is one of my favorite knights.

I think Hastings set is a little bit under-rated.. it can be paired with collector series.

It is more than a plastic chess set.. It is a "sculpture".

No regret.

▲ Black/Natural matte-finished pieces look so romantic on burgundy silicone board.

2. Reykjavik set

▲ Because of simple design, Reykjavik is one of the most beloved chess sets in the world.

It only costs $17.95.. and I think buying this set is a total win.

No regret.

3. Burgundy silicone board

▲ I washed it with soap when I received it.

It feels like a scuba diver's garment, and it is not thin.

I like this board since it always lays flat and can be folded, but some people may not.

As many of you know, it is hard to slide pieces on this board, which is not suitable for blitz chess.

For blitz chess, I would recommend normal vinyl board or PVC folding board.

If not, it is a good board with elegant color.

I chose burgundy silicone board because there is no burgundy mouse pad board.

I do not own both sets now,

but as far as I remember, Hastings bishops are bigger than those of Reykjavik.

The REYKJAVIK HOS SET IS CRAP:

#1. PAWNS ARE PETITE PIECES OF ****. WHEN MINE ARRIVED, TWO BLK ONES WERE BROKEN AT THE COLLAR. MY FINGERS CAN'T USED TO THEM, THEY HAVE SUCH A TOY FEEL.

#2. ROOK'S TEETH ARE TOO HIGH AND WEAK. CAN EASILY BREAK OFF.

#3. I NEVER LIKED THE BUBBLE HEAD OF THE BISHOPS BUT SOME PEOPLE DO OR DONT MIND.

#4. THE QUEEN IS THE BEST PIECE TO MOVE AROUND. SHE'S SHORT BUT HER DIMENSIONS GO SO WELL ON THE 57MM SQ  BOARD.

#5. FALSE ADVERTISING BY HOS ON KINGS BASE WIDTH. IT'S 1.50 TO 1.60" NOT 1.75.

Spend a few more bucks and get the Marshall. That one's a winner.

You'll love the fat rooks and the pawns have decent height.

The blk/natural looks best but You can see Nicholas Cage playing with a blk/ivory Marshall in the film 'Seeking Justice' (while his wife is getting raped somewhere) Sorry for spoilers.

I agree with you. It depends on personal preference, but I sold Reykjavik because pieces felt like a toy. I have not owned marshall, but it looks nice :)

I ordered the Reykjavik from HOS and sent it back because the plastic felt soapy and the white pieces were the color of weak tea. I wanted to like the set but I had a strong visceral reaction against it.

If it had been a harder plastic and a better white color, I might have stuck with it.

I heard that HOS plastic set used to have more elegant color on white pieces, but now it has weaker color.

Why don't you buy a wooden chess set by adding some money?

HOS Fischer-Spassky set is on clearance sale($149.95), and I am quite satisfied with it.

The plastic HOS Reykjavik pieces are small compared to the wooden set. It's a cheap set so i don't think you should be so picky. If the set was worth 80$ then you'll have a point. Even the "fischer" set is small. Tell you something. The best plastic "feel" around set is the ZURICH. but the problem is that the BISHOP is small. SO SMALL. So i ordered the Marshall set and use the pair of bishops and it's going well. happy.png

I really like the HOS (Hall of Shame) Reykjavik pieces. they are a little light, but I like the knights and bishops.

I prefer the Marshall and Hastings for playing.
