HOS set on Clearance that is A#1 full of value.

If anyone ever wanted an inexpensive set with a lot of class this might be it.  First you have to like glossy, I do myself. I bought the black & natural classic glossy set.  Here is a review I wrote on it. Was not one bit disappointed in it and proud to display it. I brought it to chess club last week and it was well admired. For a $59 set you get more than your monies worth. They are still available as I type this.

On HOS last clearance they had a Classic Glossy set on sale for $59.00+$12.73 shipping FedEx (shipping may vary vs. your location). I waited for a freind to get and inspect his set and then ordered a set in black & natural for myself.  I will now rate the different aspects what people are usually most interested in:

VALUE $59 10/10

Packing...excellently wrapped in a tissue paper to prevent scratching 9/10

Workmanship....I did not see the slighest flaw....10/10

Shipping...speed of arrival and processing order....you could not mail it out any faster...........10/10

I would recommend this set to anyone, for $59 I feel it is truly a bargain.  Remember it is glossy some like them and some don't. I have now two glossy sets and really like them.

Cyklone

That's a good deal.  I have a 3.5" Classic that I like.  Flawless set.  Looks good in golden rosewood and boxwood.

I forgot to post it is a 4" set and nicely weighted for my liking. I will put a link but usually never do so I do not get accused of spamming or fronting for a dealer.  Here it is..   http://www.houseofstaunton.com/catalog/product/view/id/14913/s/clearance-the-classic-series-chess-pieces-4-0-king/

I think it's this offer:

http://www.houseofstaunton.com/catalog/product/view/id/14913/s/clearance-the-classic-series-chess-pieces-4-0-king/

The 3.5" and 3.0" sets in this style are also on sale for $49 and $29 respectively.

This a good deal, especially for the 4" set.  This is one of the best playing sizes, and it is available in black/natural coloring.  But beware of HOS's shipping costs.  Within the US it will be at least $15.

Thanks, Mike. I get your trepidation but those that think that obviuosly don't follow your posts. You don't shill for any one dealer, you shill for quality sets ... Cool

Hi Jack. In fact I paid less than $13.00 (I believe 12.73 or 12.74) for FedEx ground from Alabama and it gets to Wisconsin in 3 business days not counting day of shipping.   I find that shipping very reasonable myself.

$90 postage to europe!

Nice set Mike at a great price.!

txmaoh

I looked at this set but bought a 4" Grandmaster set from HOS because it cost less (imperfect b/c boxwood knights were replaced although they all looked identical to me) and I like sheesham wood. The Classic and GM sets are very similar - and I echo all that was said: beautifully crafted quality pieces; nicely weighted; great value. Some very good values for imperfect HOS sets - but read the fine print and inspect the photos carefully...

BTW, I really do hate you guys.

Like I really needed another chess set.

Like I don't have enough of them already.

Like I couldn't continue to stink at chess without one more set in my home.

Thanks a lot guys .... Wink

Yeah, but look at it this way, now you can stink at a discount while looking great.  I think Rudolf Spielmann would call that a sham sacrifice. Wink

Yes but you can't blame them, our postal rates just went up again today for packages. It is super expensive to ship any package to anywhere out of the USA. We do not control that.

A little caveat emptor.

"Lacquered" may be a misleading term to apply to these chessmen. The white pieces, and perhaps even the black pieces, are actually painted. Considerable experience with painted chess sets, in contrast with natural wood and stained chess sets, has shown that it is very likely that their paint will start to chip and otherwise come off, revealing the wood underneath, unless there is actually a fairly thick layer of "lacquer" or other transparent substance applied over the paint to keep this from occurring. Stain will wear off wooden chess pieces over time, as well, but nowhere near as quickly. Natural wood, lacquered or not, chessmen will retain their original appearance far longer than any other sort.

Ty Kick I was torn atthe time betwixt the red and natural or red and white but decided to go with the black and natural. WIll probably give it to my grand daughter Isabella as she wants to take lessons.

Really a good deal.  But thank God I don't like those knights.

Unless you do not understand the definition of the term "lacquered".

The way you talk about "painted" and "chip and othherwise come off", perhaps you do not understand the term?

(Oh, and pretty sure the black pieces ARE painted. I am positive they wouuld not lacquer Ebony or even ebonized wood. Also pretty sure the sets you buy at House of Staunton are a little better quality than what you get Wal Mart or thhe Dollar Store.)

JackieMatra

The many painted sets that I referred to having seen the paint chip off of were mostly a myriad of wooden 1950s through 1970s French Lardy  chess sets, which were not sold by either Walmart or the Dollar Store, but rather by the United States Chess Federation and Chess Digest, both of whom described the sets as being lacquered. Recent ones that had this same problem were manufactured and sold by House of Chess and were also described by them as being lacquered.

"I am positive they wouuld not .... even ebonized wood"

Glad to hear it, particularly as House of Staunton themselves claim quite the contrary. (They do say that they sell "ebonized" chess sets, you know.)

What does "ebonized wood" have to do with "lacquered"? Do they state they lacquer their ebonized wood?

And as far as "lacquered", I will trust the quality iof HOS and wiscmike's word that the sets are top quality.
