True, I'd replace SC Paul Morphy with Chavet and big fat cigar with gauloise blonde happy.png

Exactly! There is nothing better then a classic set like SC Paul Morphy in rosewood, flanked by a classic analogue chess clock like Garde, accompanied with a glass of cognac and a big fat cigar on a cold autumn night! I'm with you on this one too mister MC!

That actually sounds nice. I use to smoke cigarettes awhile back. Every time I see photos of old clubs with chess players smoking and  playing chess I wish I was there. It makes me wish I played chess back when I use smoke.

Back when I played a bit at the Greenwich Village Chess Clubs,in NYC(1980's) I smoked, but not cigarettes....Probably why I got beaten so often.

Four... one standard wooden set, one fairly expensive marble set., one useless set where all the pieces look alike, and one cheap little travel set

I have 3-4 sets, one wooden, one or two plastic, one from glass I think.

Gee, after reading the above postings I don't feel so extravagant, only 23 wooden sets (>3") and a dozen wooden chess boards in six different sizes (1.75", 2", 2.125", 2.25", 2.375", and 2.5") to accommodate the various size sets.

I have a small wooden set that I use as a decorative piece (but also play on for casual games) and two "tournament" sets (one standard, one Dubrovnik)

I'm using my brother's to study Mastering Chess Strategy by Johan Hellsten, not like he uses it.

It is a custom made board with inlaid squares made of myrtle and ebony. It was made by a German craftsman. Very good quality for the price, because these boards are not too expensive (depending on the square size somewhere between 140 EUR and 180 EUR). He made three of these boards for me, one for me, two for friends of mine. The problem is that he only ships within Germany, but in case anybody is interested, I can probably assist and forward the shipment. Here are some more pictures of the board.

One. But you know what? It's better than anything out there.

I love the class and aesthetic of those platform boards.

Such a beautiful chess board. I had his German eBay store saved somewhere but lost it. I remember he also had some stunning burl veneer boards as well. Thanks for sharing this.

I can blunder moves IN STYLE with a board like this.
