Of course…. I could do a rough count from your book … but that wouldn’t be all your sets … 🤔😊

Well, I suppose the question only refers to playable sets of at least 3.5" king size, i.e. excluding decorative sets and smaller sets. In this case, I do not even have too many, probably around 50. The other 200 sets are either smaller or decorative (or both).

Hi, Holger!

Let me put in a plug for my friend Holger’s book here… https://www.amazon.com/Collecting-Chess-Sets-Holger-Langer/dp/3985274703

A short excerpt from the description of the book:

As an enthusiastic collector, I am interested in the stories behind the pieces. Always wanting to learn more about their background. Finding reliable information is not always easy. The understanding of the craft and artisans behind the chess pieces is a learning journey. It is my intent that this book takes the reader on that journey. It is aimed at chess enthusiasts who want to venture a look beyond. Experienced collectors and beginners will find interest and value. A book cannot replace the experiences that each collector must make themself, but it can provide orientation. It covers topics such as piece types and patterns, materials and well-known manufacturers. It is also intended to give suggestions on how to find a focus for collecting. The explanations are supported and illustrated with examples from the author‘s collection. It is therefore equally suitable as a reference and as casual reading.

Having been through the book myself, I can tell you that it is a extremely valuable reference containing information collated from many obscure sources and well worth the money. Buy it while there are still copies available.

@madmacsback, thank you so much for the shoutout, Robert! I am glad that you enjoyed the book.

Well,it looks as though Staunton castle has upped the anti on my splurging for the Hallett set, before Christmas....They added another 5% discout and it's back to the 15%.That's what pushed me towards the Ceska Klubovka pieces a few weeks ago. These are definitely a cut above the norm from a craftsmanship point of view.

Well, thanks to my 6 year run on this forum, I own 36 playable, wood sets.
I have always said that I am a player and not a collector.  We moved about 6 months ago and my wife shakes her head at all my sets.

I would or will only buy a set to fill a spot of those I own that is unique and of course I will use for play.

But it is true that I can really only use one at a time.

magictwanger  , I have been,  very good this year on the whole over my chess addiction , the dependence, craving, habit, weakness, compulsion, fixation, enslavement ,  credit card etc, I did fall into bias over a very rare set in late summer , The price was to good to pass off , Best part did pay off my credit card this year (my new year resolution ) Mind you had I been with my EX , there is no way I could justified my action or madness to her in these's times . I have eight sets / five antique sets . wink

Once you went through the first 'I want half!', the next 2 will be easy as nr 2 get only 1/4 (half of half) and nr 3 1/8. I can't wait to see the face of nr 4.

This thread is starting to make me feel ok again…. I thought about showing it to my wife but I think it would just strike fear … instead of her thinking - “Oh yeah, my good man only has 9 … “ she might say “No, that’s the problem, soon you’ll have 60… and why have you got 9?!”

As an aside, and I’ll let the mystery brew until after Xmas - I have pieces coming from two different suppliers - well one has already arrived - and sits under the tree - one in transit - will arrive after Xmas, probably … nothing exotic nor top-end nor antique … perhaps a hint … percolating Biedermeier’s influence and a time of transition…

To be honest,I have had real guilt over starting this thread. Firstly,it makes me seem like an obsessive nut job (probably not far from the truth) and secondly,I don't really need another set.

Unfortunately,I have this urge to get this "last one"!

Zero.

You can play on desktop and smartphones now without physical chesssets. happy.png

True. But you could sell your smartphone and get a Noj set. Hmmm. That’s got me thinking….

Indeed dr, zero is my logical choice - 97% plus of my games are here, online. Alas, logic and emotion fight inside my skull and emotion usually wins … a part of my grey matter appreciating the handcrafted pieces…. 🤦‍♂️
