I recommend you take a look Jeremy Silman's books, at your rating level, his books would probably help you a lot, they sure helped me. I also would like to recommend staying away from books on specific openings until you have a good positional knowledge of chess. That's just one persons opinion anyway.

Any book that is appropriate for your level will be useful for you. Try The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess by GM Wolf.

"... Once you identify an opening you really like and wish to learn in more depth, then should you pick up a book on a particular opening or variation. Start with ones that explain the opening variations and are not just meant for advanced players. ..." - Dan Heisman (2001)
https://web.archive.org/web/20140626180930/http://www.chesscafe.com/text/heisman06.pdf
"... Overall, I would advise most players to stick to a fairly limited range of openings, and not to worry about learning too much by heart. ..." - FM Steve Giddins (2008)
"... the average player only needs to know a limited amount about the openings he plays. Providing he understands the main aims of the opening, a few typical plans and a handful of basic variations, that is enough. ..." - FM Steve Giddins (2008)
"The way I suggest you study this book is to play through the main games once, relatively quickly, and then start playing the variation in actual games. Playing an opening in real games is of vital importance - without this kind of live practice it is impossible to get a 'feel' for the kind of game it leads to. There is time enough later for involvement with the details, after playing your games it is good to look up the line." - GM Nigel Davies (2005)

Youre not following opening principles.

Youre hanging pieces.

Youre missing simple tactics.

Openings are the last thing you should be getting a book on.

Its actually a super interesting topic.  Often the most overlooked aspects of any discipline is that learning can and should be fun.  Too many chess players sit wearing jaggy nettle underpants reading Dvortesktys endgame manual and flagellate themselves with his examples.  Find something that you enjoy reading, something that inspires you, its half the battle.

I'll second Silman's books like Reassess Your Chess and / or Amateurs Mind. Either can probably help you to get a lot better. But to get the most out of them, you really want to take your time and understand each principle explained so you can spot it over the board. One way to practice is to go over master games and try to figure the principled reason why a move was played.

Then, if you can do the same in your games, your play will likely get much better.

Gawain Jones also has some good books on the Sicilian. I suggest to dive deep immediately though and get a book on the Najdorf. Or if you like vintage: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4674885-the-sicilian-pelikan
