Nice avi, MrStryker.

MrStryker

Thanks for the link but I think that's a different version

chessam1998

Silman's books aren't bad but they just repeat what many others said before him. He just wrote it in a more commercial style. It means that, it's written in a way to make people think that chess is easy, so a new wave of players thought they finally understood chess strategy thanks to one word ("imbalances").

Has anyone written a chess book that doesn't repeat what has been written before...?

Yes for e.g. some discoveries in rook endgames are very recent and prove wrong some analysis from the 70s

I put the diagrams in a zipped folder and will continue to update it.  Here is the new link I have up to diagram 90.  https://dl.orangedox.com/QlL2ByQ0RijdnZ46Js

The link requires one to login to a Dropbox account in order to access the file.  I do not have a Dropbox account.  Can you provide a link to the file which can be accessed/downloaded without the need to have an account? (I know this is possible, as I have had a Dropbox account in the past).

MrStryker

I think if you just close the pop up box it should work. I only have a free account so it won't let me change the permission of the link.  Right now it's set to whoever has the link can download it.

Ok.  I was able to download the file from Dropbox.  I will let you know more after I have had a chance to look at it.  Thank you.

MrStryker

Ok cool I'm constantly updating it.  I'm at Diagram 114.  The games that are available from chessgames.com I'm dowloading from there, but there are games of Silman and his students as well as others that I'm having to do on my own plus all of the FEN's that aren't available.

MrStryker

I learned how to put the variations from the book into the diagrams.  Starting from Diagram 129 the variations will be added. Sorry that the other ones didn't this is my 1st time doing a project like this and I'm learning as I go. I might go back later and add them if I have time.  If anyone has any advice or recommendations on how to help my project just say the words. I'm spending more time doing the PGN's and FENs then studying but I think it will be worth it for the community in the end.

I'm a year late to this thread, but I just want to say that I really appreciate the time and effort you put into doing this.  I just recently got the book myself and thought of doing something similar but thankfully you seem to have done it already.  It shouldn't be too hard for me to add variations to any of the diagrams that you don't already have the variations for.  If I complete that, I will message you with the updated file.  Thank you again!  BTW, RussBell sounds like a jerk.

Thank you MrStryker. A wonderful boon to the chess community. Its people like you that make these chess blogs such a treasure of information.

MrStryker

Hey guys I had some issues and wasn't able to complete the project. miguel_marron stepped up to the plate and completed my work.

MrStryker

So I discussed with miguel_marron and he wanted me to have his finished work to myself for reasons I will not discuss on this forum.  I convinced him to let me publish his work.  Originally when I started this project I thought that I would be finished within a month, but here we are over a year later.  I won't discuss the details of why I stopped working on the project.  I did about 30% of the work and Miguel and his son did roughly 70%. I can't vouch for the work that was done by Miguel because I haven't gone through every diagram.  It's a very tedious job and one missed move or variation messes up the whole PGN.  I'm sure these PGNs can be improved even more by future readers of this book if they're willing to improve on it.

MrStryker

When I first started this project I contacted IM Silman through chess.com messages and let him know I was doing the project.  I didn't get a response which is another reason I didn't finish the project, but not the only reason.  I feel as if he could have at least responded with a thank you for promoting his number 1 selling book and making the sell point easier.  PGN's should be standard these days with any new chess book.  If IM Silman reads this post I would say at least send a free signed book to Miguel's son for all the hard work he put in, especially from a 12 year old kid.

MrStryker

Here is a drop box link with Miguel, his son, and my work combined.  I will also put this link on the 1st page.  Thank you Plabuk for the compliments.  I think every new chess book should have PGN's it may be up to the community to create them as unfortunate as that is.  https://www.dropbox.com/s/w8o7syd69z620uo/How%20to%20Reassess%20Your%20Chess%204th%20Edition%20pgns.zip?dl=0

Thanks for this saves me a lot of trouble!

Reassess your chess was supposed to come out in the Eplus books format years ago but I’m afraid the project was abandoned. I was really looking forward to it. Silmans endgame book is available in the Eplus format though and it’s well worth it.
