I like the chess.com 3D board so much...

that I tried to duplicate it at home, here is how it came out.

That's just the 4" Fischer plastic set on an old wooden board with 2-3/8" squares.

The shapes and proportions are about right, the color and numbering didn't matter so much to me so I think I've got it close enough... I'm very happy.

Anyone else tried to match it?

Nice! How did you do that?

Sorry, didn't mean to mislead, the bottom image is not a 3D graphic, its just a photo of a board and pieces I use to play on, that I tried to match to the appearance of the 3D board I use online. So it is a photo with the background greyed out.

I just wanted the setup I played on over the board to look like the one I played on online.

I know, I should spend more time improving my game and not wasting it fussing about appearances, but I seem to get almost as much pleasure from how good the board and pieces look as I do from playing.

Looks good regardless! If it brings you joy…keep on friend!

I was very confused until I realized your images are reversed for some reason.

I hadn't noticed that, well spotted.

At some point when combining the two images I noticed the boards tilted downwards to the left and thought it would look better tilting down to the right, so I mirrored the image without thinking (It was very late) and instantly created a nonsense image.

I only thought about the thing I wanted to achieve without considering the other consequences, which sounds a bit like the way I've been playing chess lately happy.png

That makes two of us! The image itself is pretty cool though.

White square should be on right hand side. The board is set up wrong.

That was just discussed

Notice that in the original image the chess.com 3D board is also set up wrong and the lettering is reversed? It's just a mirror image. It was my attempt to change the way the board was leaning. Not my proudest moment. I've mirrored it back to the way it was originally below.

Once it was pointed out, I must admit the previous image is pretty hard to look at, it's just plain wrong. Sorry about that.

Wonder if the 4 inch Collector Series would work as well.

Well done! More practice of what you enjoy.

Better I think, in that set the bishops appear to be a closer match and the nights have much more detail. But I don't have the 4" version.

I have those pieces in both white and natural in the 3.75" but haven't used them because the board I have set up for playing (in the original photo) has 2-3/8" (60mm) squares and looks better with 4" pieces. Below that size I only have wooden boards that have 50mm squares which is just under 2" and while it looks good and perfectly playable with the 2.75" pieces it is noticeably tighter spacing than the chess.com 3D board.

When I play on the board I have chess.com running on a TV screen right behind it and I wanted to be able to flick my eyes from the board to the screen without noticing any significant difference in the physical proportions. I'm happy with the result. Here is a picture of where I play in my box room.

You get a sense of the scale when you compare to the world championship set and board on the left.

I did something similar when I saw a photo of the board used when Bobby Fischer won the world championship that both players had signed. It looked so good I wanted to duplicate it at home... Although the boards look to be very different in size I think that's mostly how the image sizes came out when I pasted them together. I think my board is certainly slightly smaller compared to the pieces (that are the same) but not as much as it appears in this image:

I acquired the board and pieces separately and secondhand and neither are a perfect match and I don't know their origins, but as close as I could get without compromising my mental health. The pieces were very old with many splits and much damage, so I got it for peanuts and refurbished it, looks almost as good as new now.

Anyone know how many boards and sets they autographed like that? I'm guessing it wasn't just one. I wonder what became of it, museum or private collection perhaps?

Also, when I took that picture I was so focused on the the photograph and matching the angle and perspective etc that I set the board up in haste and put the white queen on the wrong square. Just wanted to put my hands up to that up front.

Hey, nice work! You’re set up nicely in your chess room. Don’t worry, this is chess.com, somebody will beat you up over it. They always do, need thick skin to post anything here. thumbup.png

Thanks, I've had plenty of time to set it up now I'm retired.

However, I seem to be leaning more towards collecting than playing. That has been a surprising discovery about myself because I really would like to be a better player. Yet I seem to struggle with motivating myself to put in the time and effort needed to improve. Just getting old and lazy I guess happy.png

Work on puzzles will help you improve. I do Puzzle Rush on Survival Mode so that I can take my time solving them. The speed of solving them isn't as important as solving them at your own pace.
