If it is alright I'd like to bump this thread to the top due to how late it was posted last night.
Inquiry on CB/SCID
You can't go wrong with SCID plus Stockfish. Totally free and neither is junk.
There's a learning curve but that's true of all powerful software, including Chessbase.
CB Seems great but it alot of $$ for SCID does most of that already. Everyone kept on talking about SCIDvsPC version but im still using the SCID. What I want is to make it a learning tool but still working on in and outs of the program. Also would help if anyone knows good opening, tactics, position, and other databases used by SCID.
Evening all.
I finally got a breather from the Online chess playing to poke around the bit on the website and, thus, found this forum. I look forward to reading the discussions that are here and are to come in the future.
I do have a question though. I'm currently operating back in the dark ages with Chessbase 11. It's a decent system that I've had for some time but never used. However, I recently got back into chess after 5 months of grad school and gave my copy of CB 11 a go. Unfortunately, I've having issues with the software randomly crashing, being buggy, etc. When it isn't glitchy, to run database and opening book checks on correspondence games on here - which I do a lot of - and analyze online (and correspondence) games after I've uploaded the PGN into a database. When it's buggy it's difficult to use in this context and I could, and have, lost lines of analysis because of the crashes.
I have no quroms when dealing with software that's a bit slow - dunno why it would be on an i7, but I grew up on dialup for 1/4 of my computing life so I don't have an issue with slight slowness - but I draw the line where it crashes often because it's so glitchy. Therefore, I am looking for alternatives.
I know Chessbase 13 is on the loose and SCID has been running around for years, though I only found out it existed three days ago. Both of them, as far as I can see, have been given high praise but I wanted to get some opinions on how they stand compared to each other. Would it be worth dropping the $200 to get the CB 13 starter package or would I be better off grabbing SCID and investing the money into some solid computer engines and other tools? Money is not an issue but I don't want to buy junk. Unfortunately, CB 11 is heading towards that classification in my book.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
