GM Andrew Soltis annotated 15 of Steinitz's games in Kurt Landsberger's William Steinitz, Chess Champion. A Biography of the Bohemian Caesar. Garry Kasparov annotated 16 of Steinitz's games in My Great Predecessors Part 1. Sid Pickard also had a CD called The Collected Works of Wilhelm Steinitz.
Instructive Collection of Steinitz's Games
Al Right...I have in my chess library about Steinitz:
The Book of Devidé ( Very old, and with poor analyzes) cited Andy Clifton
Landsberger and Kasparov, Yes like rigamagician, but...
The Best is without doubts the Worderful CD of Sid Pickard "The Collected Works of Wilhelm Steinitz" because in that the comments of Steinitz to the games are masterful, and everithing that Steinitz Had write ( The Magazines -Selection). Photos, Puzzle, etc, etc. One of thebest things done in chess Software.
Before this, Sid Pickard released a book about Steinitz called: " The Games of Wilhelm Steinitz- First World Champion" , but he killed Steinitz twice! Steinitz in Informator style is a shame! The Steinitz verbal comments and analyses and one of the best in Chess History ! A poor book, that is today sold 5 GBP! (let's look)
If someone know russian, well ...a fantastic book of a great teacher, and scholar (vide Sosonko, about him!) Yakov Neishtadt! " Steinitz First World Champion" . Wonderful balance betwen analises and strategic coments. He tries explain Steinitz technique and thinking! A classic, never transleted in English! I have the Italian version, and is marvellous.
Nice post. I have some books in German (which I don't read fluently) but you can usually pick up a few key words and follow the variation lines and know what they are talking about. If you can pick up a used book at a bargain price somewhere, you can always make good use of it if it isn't written in your native language.
BTW, there are 16 games by Steinitz in the Kasparov My Great Predecessors, Vol. I.
Thanks for your suggestions everyone! 5xadrezmemoria7, it's great to hear of something I hadn't yet found online. That CD sounds great. Did I understand correctly that you didn't like the book though? It says the games are annoted by Steinitz.
I repeat , In the Book of Steinitz by Sid Pickard -yes is Steinitz notes, but only variants, moves. Sid Pickard cut the marvellous Verbal comments of Steinitz. In this comments , Steinitz is marvellous explain ideias, strategic plans, the change of positions, The value and developement of the pieces and so on. This comments are in the CD! The book, only moves, figurative notation ( Yes by Steinitz, but without Text. Editorial obligation: If Book with verbal coments: more less: 500 pages! The book without Text 260!
Why do You think that is book is sold in England for 5GBP- a bargain?
Thanks
Is there a good, instructively annotated collection of Steinitz's games for amateur players? If so, which would you recommend?
