iPhone & Chess.com

Question: if you have an iPhone, can it use all parts of this website such as turn-based chess? I want one really badly, and this may turn the key for me. I'd like to hear from someone who actually has an iPhone and has done this - OR if you know way too much about the iPhone. I just don't know if it can play all java applets.

erik
we don't use java applets. but we haven't optimized for the iphone. i should test it :)

What is the chess interface written in?
StacyBearden
...and that's a GREAT reason for you to rush out, today, and get an iPhone, Erik. Tax deduction, too...

chess.com boards DO use java, dont they?
StacyBearden
I just loaded chess.com on my friend's iPhone and the chess boards would not even load. Erik?
TalFan
I thought the boards were in Ajax .
erik

the boards are in ajax. no java involved.

did you friend have the most recent iphone browser? safari stinks for javascript :(

shadowc
Safari is awfull... but I think you might be able to install firefox on a iphone, or even opera... If not now, soon.
StacyBearden
I don't know about the browser. He's had the phone a while, I think, but if it updates like iPods do, and if he syncs regularly, he should have the latest version. It's interesting at least. I'd LOVE to be able to play on the iPhone - if I had one, that is.

Update about iPhone and chess for all those interested: Shredder has a page designed exclusively for iPhone - and it's awesome. Look at the below link:

Erik: I know you can make this site work for iPhone - but I don't know if it's worth your time. You're probably thinking that, too.

My review of the iPhone, as related to chess.com and chess, then everything else, is now READY FOR VIEWING. Please refer to my article in the "Articles" section of chess.com and give me a good rating. :)

That is all.

The chess programs are nice, but I want to be able to play real people, not just computer programs. My co-worker has an iPhone and we tried accessing chess.com but could not display the boards. iPhone seems really cool but it just doesn't quite do what I need it to do, like have more storage, drag-n-drop bi-directional file transfer, sync with Outlook, run on a faster network, support stereo bluetooth headphones. It's more like the hope for the phone/PDA yet to come. If it worked with chess.com, that might just push me over the edge and I'd buy one. (Maybe it's good that it doesn't?)
StacyBearden
It does sync with Outlook.

haha iphone.  I love those ads which mention using your iphone to check "can i afford this".  Priceless.

*Bump*

I've recently picked up an iPhone and I would LOVE better support on chess.com for it. This is a great site, and if the javascript on the chess boards could be optimized for the iPhone it would push it over the edge. They seem to work for me sometimes, but when they do they're really slow (i.e. click on a piece, wait wait wait, click on the destination, wait some more, see the move).

I'd even have a go at doing it myself if I could, I make websites for a living ;)

They've been working for me more and more as of late. But I still can't post anything in a forum. The text entry field is not functional.
